That's a first for us

In all the years and hundreds of TDV6 engines we've stripped down, this is the first time we've ever come across studs being used instead of bolts. Shocked

Is it any wonder the main bearing caps were flopping around in the block, allowing all the bearings to spin.

Strange - studs are almost always used as an upgrade vs bolts when building high performance engines; they allow a much higher clamping force as the stud is only deformed along one axis (length), while a bolt has to be deformed along two axes (stretched along its length and twisted around its core) to provide the same clamping force..

Of course, as far as I know, ARP don't make a stud kit for JLR engines (at least I can't find one in their catalogue) and studs made of Chineseum-alloy will be much worse than OE bolts.. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

The problem here is that they are too long. The head of the bolts are just protruding past the surface where the sump mates up, like this.

Because they are so long, whoever did this had to remove the splash guard in the sump and even had to cut one of the studs to stop it fouling.
