You are thinking of the V8 petrol engines which the later versions are built by JLR and are not a Ford engine. The Lion diesels remained at the Ford Dagenham plant in the UK. The Ford Powerstroke version was supposed to be built in Cleveland in the US but this was changed back to Dagenham. 07MY RRS TDV6

Interesting the issues are still evident though I read somewhere but cant find it the same that F150 truck uses the same engine but they replace the bottom end to stop the issue as in the USA they have the lemon law that bascially hold the manufacturer to providing a car that is fit for purpose, any US buddies might be able to shed more light on it but I think form waht ive read the Manufacturer of the vehicle is resposible for all the components within it and any faults outside wear and tear and normal use need to be recitfied or supported at the end user has purchased in good faith.

I dont think anyone is asking LR to recall and replace the engine but they should be providing support should one suffer.

To me If im getting a whole new engine then I dont mind having to pay some towards it but the fact is that its failed and isnt my fault.

I'm still dumbfounded that in the UK we do not have a law that covers this! There is the consumer law but that required the seller to cover the costs and in all honesty how many dealers out there would be stung with this and even then its not their fault the were selling a car that has an inherrent issue so why should they have to bear the brunt of the manufacturuers design or build flaw, either way there is an issue that is not cause by any purchaser. If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

Pj that was something I was going to ask you, when & who did you buy the car from? If it was fairly recently purchased from a dealer I would have thought you would have a case against them?

Sorry to hear about this, I was looking to either buy a slightly older sport to replace my current one, but it would have to be a V8 for exactly this reason & keep it for 4-5 years or go for a new p400e, I decided to go for the new hybrid this time but in 3 years time I may opt for the first option but the new bmw engines will hopefully be more reliable so our safe choices should hopefully increase going forward.

It is a disgrace though JLR treat people like this.

I found a few specialists that have new sdv6 short blocks in stock, don’t know prices but some offer up to 5 year extended warranties, if you have no luck with JLR that’s the route I would go down.

This is one reason why car manufacturers sell through franchised dealerships. You buy from the dealership, not LR, so any contractual obligations fall squarely on the dealerships shoulders. I'd like to see the law changed so that both the dealer and the manufacturer are responsible. Sure, they can argue between themselves who is at fault for a given issue, but they can do that after the customer has been looked after. Obviously, this only applies for new cars - second hand cars are just you and the seller.

It would be nice if manufacturers were made to provide 5 year warranties across the board, too. No excuse for 2 or 3 years these days. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I dont think anyone would expect the Manufacturer to just replace parts on an engine forever and wear and tear is to be expected but for what would be classed as major components that are detrimental to it being classed as a car and not a cravan, trailer or ornament should have soem leve of protection against and obviuos failure not a failrue due to excessive mileage or abuse or wear and tear.

The issue is the problem can occur or it miught not and this is clearly known so offering to support their mistake should be a legal requriement.

I had a PCB fail in my merc where oil form the gearbox works its way in and then you only got 1st Netural and reverse!
It was a known fault and they still tried to charge for however I complained (as did anot guy sat next to me who had the same problem, the manager cam out and said ok the car is low mileage and this should have happend and spoke to MB for assistance and they said yes I just paid for a service as part of the deal. all out of warranty too.

£13 K is alot of money to pay out for the average person and its nots just the cost to pay, I will be paying inot a car that is ever losing money as they all do but will never get the value for money out of it! They are also profiting from the failure too.

The dealer is tied becuase they can do the work but they charge it back to LR so if they wont pay then they wont do the work unless I pay.

Look at it this way when I bought the car if it was 13K more than book but the guy said it has a new enging fitted, would i have paid the extra? The answer would be no as it way more expensive than all of its comptetion and it presents and impression that there is something worng with the car as it needed a new engine!

This is not sour grapes so to speak I just dont understand how its legalto sell an object that has potential to fail at major cost and then not be responsible for it or at least bear some of the cost!

Ive had soem calls left from a guy called Junior based on my email to JLR CS but Im pretty sure he wont be person to do anything and they obsiuosly cant follow simple instructions as I asked for a reply by email? But I suspect that they do not want to put anything in writing as it will be a hard facts where as a phone call is just that a conversation! Howver I will contact them back record the call letting them know that and ahsl follow up the covnersation in writing for the records! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

Bought from an independant dealer who only dealt in LR's Disco's, L405's L494's and some of the baby ones he had 20-30 odd on stock and only went with him has he had the spec car I wanted if a bigger dealer had I would of gone there!

Was a WE Buy Any Crap for peniies down the road from me that had one same spec but higher miles and the interior was bit strange black seata but cream arm rests dash steering centre and it look a bit grubby but was cheaper!

I think last year killed him business wise as he was saying about how hed just bought aload of fresh stock end of Sept from the new plate trade ins and was maxed out and then covid hit! So chances of him supporting are slim to none, that said when i know waht the bill is I will get in contact! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

Just been looking around at replacement engines, great way to spend a Sunday! Mainly looking at costs across the board really.

Now a new box from LR is reassuringly expensive and still only has 2yrs warranty!

There seem to be lots of different place offering the engines either to buy and get fitted or they collect your car and fit for you.
Now these guys offer a 12-month warranty on them, but the cost is so much lower! Now I understand that maybe workmanship here could be an issue however the is an argument that it’s no worse than factory LR seeing as the engine has already gone bang once and not sure if there is any actual fix from LR or any of the aftermarket places.

So, whilst I am not sold on the idea out right, I have to ask myself if I were to pay £14K to JLR for a new engine and get 2 yrs warranty and it could still go bang after 2 year (but in order for them to even consider helping out again it would need to be serviced with a dealer at a much higher cost than an Indy so there would be that hidden cost on top.

Using an aftermarket company to supply a unit with only 12 months but that can be serviced at an Indy at a lower cost seems also semi effective as even if it did go bang again just after the year warranty ended to purchase another engine would still be cheaper than paying JLR to replace with a refurb, you could almost get away with 3 engines for the same money.

I hear the concerns about workmanship on these cheaper refurb units and if they would actually honour the warranty if there were to be an issue, but it does seem that whilst JLR are not prepared to help at all with a problem that is not user related it does seem that they are also profiteering out of the situation if they are commissioned to do the work being paid by the punter or by an insurance policy but not really sure where the value is? There is also the point that JLR will be keeping my old unit to refurb and resell again so will also be getting that in return as well, I understand this is the case with all of them, one in one out which is fine, not sure her indoors would be that happy about a busted old engine sat in the garden!
The service, reputation aside is pretty much the same from all an I'm sure some are better than others as far as professionalism etc… but I'm just struggling to understand really what advantage there is of using JLR and paying a much higher price, is there really piece of mind considering that none of this should have happened in the first place! If an indy fits a genuine LR part, it is covered by a nationwide JLR 2yr unlimited mileage parts and labour warranty, at a much reduced cost of having the work done at a main dealer

So it’s around £5k for an Indy to fit a refurb engine? I would certainly go down that road but do a bit of research on the Indy before I gave the go ahead. The reason I have recently got a warranty is because of what could go wrong with these engines as I assumed they were £14k plus. If they can be replaced for around the £5k mark I think I would maybe have saved £1k by not taking out the warranty and put it towards a £5k engine if the worst was to happen. Keep us informed with what you do please.

Disco good point and didnt know that I suppose it depends on the Indy as to whether they are buying LR parts or just buying from breakers and giving the engines a tickle or not!

Ive only had a look around on the likes of Ebay and a few others Ive found so not had a chance to contact them to discuss so the figures might not be 100% accurate.

It just shocked me to find that there was such a difference I was expecting a few grand.

I get there is a hassle factor if one of the cheaper units were to blow just outside of 12 months and but if the issue hasnt been address with a fix its a gablem either way. The cheaper costing repairers might be great ro might be bad but I cant think any would stay in business for very long on sub par work but Ive heard many stories of the same type of work from JLR so its not like paying the extra money get Mercedes Petronas engineers work on it!

It was just and interesting thought as to whether going for longevity and potential support from JLR or going the indy route was better as it could work out I could get say maybe 3 engines if each went bang just after 12 months not have to pay for a service (if it went bang around the time of the service neing due that is) and after the 3rd engine I would still have a new engine with 1 years warranty still left on it at the end of the 3rd year for the same kind of money, thats not factoring in the time to get it fitted and collection etc...

On top of that like Johnrrs has said spending over 1k per year to warrant against it and then having to fight to get cover also that covers stops at 10yrs or 100K seems maybe self insuring isnt so bad.

That is if JLR wont help in the slightest, even if they came back to me and said hey yeah sorry we have been chumps we can do 50% that then puts it in the ball park of the top end indy companies offering the refurbs!

Also as Disco_Mikey has said if the indy is using a JLR Gen refurb unit then it has 2yrs too!
I am just struggling to see any value going down the JLR route at the moment considering how they reacted! (not the dealer that is JLR HQ) If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!
