Without a doubt remove the head yourself is the sensible way forward.

yeah, i think it is for sure the way to go, i guess its just having the confidence to get stuck in, i've read countless times how some consider replacing egr valves and coolers a big deal, i have replaced them myself on this car and a previous disco without too much faff.... |

oh if only.... i've been chasing this issue for several months, i changed both egr's and coolers a couple of months ago, weirdly, the car still drives fine, no overheating, no white smoke, no water in oil-oil in coolant etc... only real symptoms are poor heater, and serious amount of air returning to expansion tank, i was checking all the pipework, and the thermostats in the egr coolers yesterday and just thought i would run another sniff test and sure enough, it turned green... and so did i at the same time |

You will need something heavy duty for head bolts and a scaffold bar. |
