hi everyone, my beloved RRS 2.7 took not well recently, (see previous post "high coolant pressure")
anyway to get to the chase, i ran a sniff test yesterday and it has proved positive for the first time in at least a dozen test's recently, so now i know beyond doubt there are exhaust gases in the coolant, so....head gasket, cracked head or manky block.

so my dilemma is; do i get rid as is and cut my loss, take a chance on a used engine, OR...pull it part myself, i'm not a land rover specialist by any means, but i do know my way around an engine to a reasonable degree,

so any advise would be highly apreciated as i really do love this car and it would break my heart to sell it for salvage btw its a 07' HSE rimini red with oatmeal interior and 22inch stormers, and in lovely condition (other than the teas made under the bonnet)

questions might include, do i need any special tools to remove head ?
would i need to remove both heads ?
is it a job that is reasonable to do without removing the body ?

i realise the car doesn't have a great value if it were without faults, i also know that if i send it to an indy to cure it, it's going to run in to thousands as opposed to hundreds and i just could not justify spending the price of another sport on this car, hence why i'm considering having a go at pulling it apart myself, because as i see it i have not a lot to lose,

Without a doubt remove the head yourself is the sensible way forward.

The drivers side is fairly easy to remove. So do that first. If you don’t find a problem there that is where is gets tricky.
The passenger side is a right pain to remove. So at this point you could continue, or scrap

You undo the exhaust manifold through the wheel arch.
Much faffing with heat shields. Number them before removal.
Remove EGRs.

Remove injectors, fuel rail, fuel rail bracket
Cambelt. Cover, cambelt

yeah, i think it is for sure the way to go, i guess its just having the confidence to get stuck in, i've read countless times how some consider replacing egr valves and coolers a big deal, i have replaced them myself on this car and a previous disco without too much faff....

oh if only.... i've been chasing this issue for several months, i changed both egr's and coolers a couple of months ago, weirdly, the car still drives fine, no overheating, no white smoke, no water in oil-oil in coolant etc...
only real symptoms are poor heater, and serious amount of air returning to expansion tank, i was checking all the pipework, and the thermostats in the egr coolers yesterday and just thought i would run another sniff test and sure enough, it turned green...
and so did i at the same time

Search for member Naks on here. In his signature there is a link to the workshop manual if you don't already have it.  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

You will need something heavy duty for head bolts and a scaffold bar.
