2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Alaska White
Bank B sequencer chain snapped

Hi couple questions. Chain snapped,. Ive pulled the rocker off and fished the chain out but i cant find the link that would have snapped. Will it be an issue?

Also whats the chances of the valves being ok? Looking don the ports, the inlets all appear to be closed.

I guess you can live with a missing link.

Some people have gotten away with it. (Had sealed valves I mean)
Sometimes the cam lifters/rockers break which is good. Check they are in one piece.

Upto you whether you put it back together and hope for the best. (I would, and taking the head off the passenger side is hard work)

Look out for balance codes when it’s running again

And expect lots of smoke for a while, until Unburnt fuel clears

Hi Andy, managed to get her all back up and running today she started within 20 seconds, but is running rough. Almost as if only running on 5 cylinders. Ive pulled injector connector off bank B one at a time and no noticable difference to engine note/tone.

No fault codes either. I can hear what sound like air being sucked in/escaping ans a tinking kind of noise which is strange.

All rocker arms and lifters were fine.

Im going to plug ids in tomorrow to see what I can find. Do you know where the balance section is on IDS?

Is there an easier way to get TDC other than removing the starter?

Also going to do a compression test. What should i be looking for?

You aren’t meant to pull inj. Connectors off these while running. They can jam open.

The compression results should be obvious.

Maybe air is being pushed back into the inlet during compression

Don’t know about ids

Ah ok thanks mate. I didnt know that.

Im hoping i can get the glow plugs out easy without them sticking.

Beginning to think a valve is bent like you say as that could explain the tinking noise too?

Gp access is poor passenger side.
Can’t you put the tester in the injector holes?

Hi Andy, not really had any time to look at this. But just before i do. Could the alternator not working possibly have anything to do with mis fire? Lack power? Ie the ecu is limiting it? Has a fully charged battery and starts on the nose.

Also where is the starter relay? I need to imstall a switch under the bonnet so that i can turn the engine over when. On my own.

Given what’s happened, it’s likely a bent valve

Starter relay is in the box next to the battery, marked SM

The exhaust isn’t too much of an issue.

You remove the heat shields in the wheel arch, carefully marking, photoing, numbering how they fit, as they are a pain to refit.
Then using several long extensions, unbolt the EGRs, shield and then manifold

The manifold can stay where it is, and the head lifted slightly and moved into the center of the engine.

The fuel belt , and belt cover is far more of a hassle though

Thanks andy will comp test and update. If comp is low, is it new head time or replace valves?

Mine an early engine so the fuel pump is fairly easy.

Hi mate, purchaced a head but didnt realise it doesnt come with cams or cam retainers. Can i just swap them over from my head?

Also are the injectors coded?? Cheers.

You really need the cam retainers
But i don’t know what you have to loose, reuseing old ones.

Injectors aren’t coded

Jaguar 2.7 heads are the same
