How to tell which locking wheel nut

I have looked at the search function and not found an answer so hence this post

I am trying to get a set of wheels off an L320 2012

Looking at the nut it is a 4 prongs on it in a cross shape.

Is there a list of the different keys?

I can’t move the car so cannot take to the dealer to try them out.

Is there an after market multi key that I could use? Or am I best hacking the wheels nuts

I tried to hammer a 12 point 24mm socket on one but it didn’t really achieve anything

Thanks

If there is a locking one, then it will be distinctively different so you may not have any fitted.

See if you can match the pattern on the Evil Bay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=ran...ition=3000

The standard wheel nuts have a chrome cap that rusts inside and then just spins so you can't use a socket to remove them.

To get mine off, I used a large screwdriver and a hammer. I punched a hole through the top (off to one side) to fracture the cap. Then using the same method, work it round until you 'peel' the chrome cap off the wheel nut. Once you've done that, you can use a socket to remove the nut.

Obviously, you're going to need to buy a new set of wheel nuts (and a set of locking ones if you want them), but it's worth it.

It sounds brutal and like hard work, but I'm nearly seventy and a wheelchair user with knackered hands. If I can do it, anyone can.

Tip. Take your time, you don't want to damage the wheel. A pair of large pliers will help too . . .

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Bali Blue

Picture is not great but looks very similar to mine,, genuine land rover locking wheel nuts. Trying to hammer something over the top will not work as the cap will spin. The keys are available on ebay,,,,,, but there are at least 20 to choose from,, each have a letter of the alphabet to identity them. The only way I got mine off was to cut a groove across the face then fracture the cap with a seriously sharp cold chisel,, then bash on an undersized socket to remove the remainder. Very time consuming,,, rotary burrs and cobalt drills are your best friends to put a hole in the cap as the are hardened steel. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Any LR dealer should have a full set of keys to get your locking wheel nuts off (providing they're original ones). If they're aftermarket, it could be a real PITA as gogsy says.

I found mine to be quite easy to remove - especially given that my hands are more than fifty percent down in strength. Question

Anyway, I've just had a look on YT and found this. It's similar to how I did mine, but he makes it look like hard work. Once the chrome has split, bang the screwdriver down the side to split it, then it will peel off easily - unlike the mess he's made of them.

Thanks the standard wheel nuts are fine, I have cracked them off with a 23mm 6 point socket and tightens them up again to apply force in the hope it makes undoing the locking wheel nut easier.

I’m sure they are genuine Land Rover ones but not being able to to take to a dealer I was hoping for an identification or a multi wheel nut tool to get them off.
I could start butchering them as it’s only a vehicle I am breaking but I want minimal effort and least mess possible and also don’t want to damage the wheels

Thanks

If you can get just one of the locking nut's off, if you look at the face of the rotating washer the code for the locking nut is stamped on it, perhaps you could then get the correct key for the other three off fleabay or something.

Cheers

I think I used a 27mm 12 point to get mine off, never to return. Replaced all with Gorilla one piece lug nuts. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
