N/S/F Rattling at Speed?

Hi Everyone.

At about 80 on the motorway and generally when the n/s/f is into the wind, I get a rattling sound coming from front passenger door area?

It doesn't seem to be internal (so no its not the Mrs talking!) as the interior is pretty much rattle free. Its not constant and goes when you drop below 80.

I have checked all the exterior trim, mirrors, pillar covers etc and it all seems solid. Nothing is loose. I wouldn't think it was buffeting because it doesn't happen when the drivers side is into the wind.

Any ideas??? - and please don't say don't do 80! Laughing

Is the bonnet correctly closed? I have found on occasion that the passenger side hasn't latched and so can vibrate with airflow. The bonnet closed switch is on the driver's side latch which is why it might occur without you noticing. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Initial thoughts are:

Loose mud flap (if fitted)
Loose trim strip on the foot step
Everything tightened up underneath in that corner 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

From what you've said Phil, I assume you've checked the vent on the wing?

On mine, whilst it didn't make a noise when travelling, I think a clip was missing and could be rattled by hand. I took it off and bonded it on with some clear silicone. Problem solved. Kev

Thanks everyone. The bonnet seems ok, the sidestep seems ok and the mudflap is hand tight, so I am still looking. I'll check the vent but again, its hand tight and doesn't seem to move.

I think its going to be a strange one. Marble in the ashtray kind of thing.

Have you had a new window screen recently?

Yeah had a similar issue after having screen replaced, turned out to be broken clip at top of screen pillar trim, replaced all the clips and noise disappeared.

Cheers

Lots of things to check and likely a case of checking everything one at a time.

For my thoughts in addition to those mentioned.

There’s that pointless bag thing behind the wing that everyone thinks is rubbish.
The black rubber strip in the roof gutter.
A chattering windscreen wiper if it doesn’t have the spoiler or upside down.
Wheel school liner clips missing.

As mentioned. Loose trim on the side step is a good call. Both my trims have popped the first rivets. You may need to look at the back to check rather than rely on trying to move the trim. 2012 5.0 SC AB

I had a similar problem long ago and found it was the top of the windscreen rubber getting high speed air under it and causing it to flap basically like the reed in a musical instrument. Sounds unlikely and that is exactly why it was hard to pinpoint. Get a roll of good quality duct tape and after thoroughly cleaning the rubber along the top of the screen - tape all along then test drive. Tip, don’t leave the tape on for more than a day or so or in sunny hot conditions or you will take a week to get it off again. Peel back on itself is the best way to avoid it tearing. 4 Landrovers and 7 Range Rovers in 40 years.

I had exactly the same thing as blastcleaner and it sounds as though it's coming from inside the door but it was the plastic runners joining up to the top of the windscreen that had some loose so the wind was getting underneath it at around 70mph.

Stuck it down, never came back.

Felt sorry for the lady who owned the car before me, looking at the invoices for work she'd had done I could see she'd paid loads of an Indy to try and investigate the sound.

Thanks everyone and sorry for my delayed reply! I've taken my side steps off now and its not quite as bad, they were very badly corroded underneath with bits of loose metal, so they went in the skip!

Debating whether I prefer the car with or without the steps?!

The trim strip on the roof was a bit raised, so I pushed that back home properly and will give that a try.

Definitely going to try and locate this myself and not spend a fortune having it checked. Pete

and the problem was..... a trim clip missing from the black weather strip on the roof! it left a small hole which the wind got inside off and made the noise. A bit like when you blow over the top of a bottle.

Sorted with an 87p clip and now completely silent Thumbs Up Pete
