He's a salesman, why would you expect him to have any technical knowledge? His job is to be shiny and smiley and lie through his teeth to get your money. Rolling with laughter

Sadly, it's not unusual for LR salesmen to know little about the product they're selling. I asked some questions about a D4 in a local LR dealership a couple of years ago. It was very apparent that I knew more about the vehicle than the salesman did. Then again, I had to tell the "technicians" how to fix my vehicle on more than one occasion... Censored 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Unfortunately I cannot say I am surprised. I have learnt so much from the members on this forum which is usually the case when you buy a car Thumbs Up

Hello chaps - resurface of this thread. Looking through SH on my RRS Autobipgrahy 3.0 2011....

117k miles... Timing belt was done in September. I called the garage to confirm if water pump was done too and they said no as this doesn't drive the cambelt on RR... Is this right? Should they have changed? and as they haven't is it something I should look at getting done given age/mileage.... Thanks
Liam

Hi Liam,
have a go with the "Search" button in the orange banner near the top of the page, as there is a bit of reading you can do Thumbs Up

Your belt change was done a bit late Shocked it was due at 7 years.

Most peeps are concerned about the Oil pump not the water pump Question although it was really only an issue on the earlier model years ISTR 2007/8 but the search should shed some light

The rear belt dives the high pressure fuel pump which supplies fuel to common rail. On the 3.0 it is timed (something to do with creating pulses to level out the pressure as the injectors open?). As in the 2.7 the engine would just stop if it broke, but I have no idea if replacemnt becomes problematic on the 3.0. I understand when changing the rear belt on the 3.0 there is locking pin that has to be used, I guess to preserve that timing.
Hopefully an expert will be along shortly to give the correct answer.
I personally would have the rear belt done at the same time as the front because it won't last for ever and who knows when it might go and leave you stranded. That being said I am struggling to remember a member reporting it failing. Do they never break or does everybody change them as recommended?

I had Disco-Mikey do a service, cambelts, g/box flush & transfer box oil change a couple of months ago. Car, 6 years old only done 12000miles & a lot of people would be Shocked but oil & rubber deteriorates with time as well as mileage, more so rubber,
Gives me piece of mind as I plan to keep it. Not worth trading & spending an extra £50k or so to get one with 12000miles less.
Must be getting sensible in my old age as my cars were always replaced after 3 years regardless of mileage. Big Cry

apparently if the fuel belt goes it can take out the wiring loom.
I would change it once in your ownership so you know its been done.
I wouldn't want to over do it, as access it poor and other damage could be done.

The auxiliary belt on my last Volvo let go and took out the cam belt and consequently the cylinder head. A lot of damage for a £20 bit of rubber. Change it if its old, no guarantee it wont fail, but at least you know you did the right thing. RRS HSE Dynamic SDV6 2014
