Battery Options

Hello all,
Had a service recently and was informed it may be time to consider changing
the battery, so asked the MOT garage if they could check the condition with
winter coming, they said the battery was in good condition but could do with
a run to just bump it up a little,
It normally sits on an app I have around 11.9-12.2 with little change and I am
not 100% sure how accurate the app is,

With this in mind I phoned the local dealer as I was informed by the RAC that my
2012 would need to be programmed once the new battery was installed,
The dealer wants £412 to do it all including the programming,

What is this programming and does it have to be done or can I get a better battery
else where and not have it programmed??

TIA,
Neal ===========================================

That is crap, it is advised to reset BMS after fitting new battery, but they will recalibrate themselves over time buy I'm sure a Indi will do it cheap enough though, I replaced mine 4 years ago and never reset anything and never had a issue, buy a battery from the likes of Tanya and fit it yourself, just make sure the battery is fully charged before fitting.

Cheers

Thank you,

can the BMS be reset using the IID Tool?

I have one but I only really use it for the code reading.. ===========================================

Yes, no problem there are a few options in there to change battery capacity if you fit a different rated one, but not sure if it really makes a difference. Thumbs Up

As Col says the battery monitoring system will, over a short time, work out what type of battery has been fitted ie an AGM or non AGM.
If you replace an AGM with another AGM then you don’t need to do anything and your quote is an attempt at a rip-off.

I actually replaced the original factory Wet battery for a larger capacity 95Ah 850A AGM on my S/C, as they only ever fitted 700A Wet to the petrol RRS1's for some reason and as said never changed anything and never had a problem.

Cheers

Why are you using a dealer on an 8 year old vehicle? You may as well just walk in with your trousers around your knees and bend over in front of the service desk.

Get thee to an indie, save a load of money and get better treatment.

£400 to replace a battery. Really? FFS. Rolling Eyes 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

To be fair to Neal, he may not be too mechanically minded. Its (unfortunately) because of customers like this that the RAC etc can charge such outrageous fees for simple stuff. Thing is, we know that a battery change is not hard and that's why we visit forums like this to pass on knowledge.

Forgot to come back on this,

The reason for the quote is I just wondered how much they would charge,
as on the odd occasion they come in reasonable but as you say most of the time they
are trying to take the micky,

I am still looking as the current battery is still working well,

I do have an question though

Can you have too high rated battery,

I have found the one that is the right size 019
Ampere Hours - 100
CCA (SAE) - 1100
Technology - AGM
Weight - 27 kg

Would this be OK or too much?

Also can you use a stop start battery on a none stop start car? ===========================================

No problem using a Stop/Start AGM battery, had a Varta one on mine for nearly 5 years with no problem.

Hi,
Had an AGM battery on our TD5 disco about 15 years ago Thumbs Up

If a battery is labeled as a S/S it is because it can handle the loads the S/S system puts on it
You could consider it an upgrade if you don't have S/S Whistle

You can now get EFB as well, (thread over on RRS) which is Enhanced Flooded Battery
