It looks like an interesting unit, Luke. Well done for being the first one to take the plunge on this one. Thumbs Up

It'll be good to hear how you get on with it over the next few months.

I fitted an Android unit in my previous car and found it a little buggy (apps crashing etc.). Fingers crossed this won't happen to your unit but if it does, it's great that you have direct comms with the techs back in China to potentially get fixes in place.

I'm really interested to hear how it works out for you. Kev

Luke, just a thought, if you want a factory look for the USB, you could get a late Disco 4 top glove box with the USB input, I’ve put one in mine and it just needed a locating tab trimming off the Disco 4 version for it to fit.

Ok played around a little more today .

Noticed a few things

1.) Microphone doesn't work , If i click the google speak button i can hear like a internal "Pop" Sound , and when you cancel the google speak thing it makes a pop again.

2.) This could have been a faulty connector on my end ( I imagine more where it connects to the rear of the satnav for power ) but i went over a few speed bumps and the screen turned off and back on ( Reset ) which could be a power issue on a connector or cable that is loose . This does piggy back power from the rear satnav connector. I took everything apart and made sure everything is pushed back in. I will be testing this tomorrow again after a long drive.

Microphone for me is the biggest issue at the moment , this also done the same on Bluetooth phone connection ( I also couldnt hear them which is weird ! )

Thanks
Luke

After some more playing :

The machine randomly rebooting has gotten worse , I think its when i have many apps open in the background its overheating and crashing.

I was Out today 1 hour drive and the unit randomly rebooted in a constant loop. The unit feels very hot to touch. And i noticed there doesn't looks like there is any air vent holes !

I think im going to bring it in doors and play with it on a test bench and see if i can get it to overheat, and work on it from there.

That being said , the built in 4G is very good Very Happy

Defiantly not recommended ! so please don't buy one Very Happy

Just to add, Apparently this is a software "Issue".

I now have this rigged up to my PC PSU so doing testing indoors.

CPUZ reports the CPU temp of being 100 Degrees + , which doesn't seem good !

Seems like this could be a known issue on other devices using this hardware , i was contacting the techs on weechat and they seem surprised it was happening on this version.. But not surprised it happens on all the others lol !

Any way, apparently a software update for this "This Week!"... Lets see how it goes Very Happy

Luke,

TBH almost all these Chinese units overheat. If you look on XDA forums you'll see plenty of them modify the head unit with PC heat sinks and fans, plus cutting holes in the chassis Laughing 2006 RRS S/C CONSTANTLY under modification...

I have had a few android units before , Never had them get hot enough to reboot loop :p

Currently have an Idrive replacement in the GF's X1 , works great.

Im assuming the larger units with slightly lower spec CPUS must run better without the need for as much cooling.

Will be interesting to see what they come up with Wink

Guyzer73 - I can see you have a Joying, I was one of the original people to put the single din in the lotus . In my opinion one of the best built Chinese android units Wink. Never had any problems with mine Very Happy

I've had a few different units some did overheat and shutdown, however, the Joying unit has performed well on that count, even with 40C heat here. It helps that the actual HU is nestled between the AC vents deep inside the dash.

The problem with the current Joying units is they run an Intel based SoC and there is very little in the way of modification, but, some people have worked hard and with patience and workarounds you can get it pretty good. I'll post a video of my current interface, it's pretty OEM but toook ages to set-up 2006 RRS S/C CONSTANTLY under modification...

OK installed their update today and the unit is sitting around 68-70c , This is with 2 map software's and their audio software playing. ( 20-30% load )

I think a better test will be tomorrow once the outside temp heats up a bit !

I have also turned screen brightness down to 50% as 100% was blinding !

OK Onboard microphone. Something is definitely not working correctly with it . They also don't provide an external Aux connector for an external Mic.

I have worked out that a USB microphone does work brilliantly with the unit Wink So now going to do some testing with that .

Good news on the mic. Will you mount it in the interior light housing? Kev

Unsure as of yet , Need to find out my options on the USB microphone really.

Here's for any one interested , AUX input Via the Sat-nav/DVD module ( instead of running cable to rear)

Disregard the colouring ( This is the china loom) , just follow the positions ( Ground is number 3 though ) , hopefully some one can verify that for me Very Happy

someone on youtube has fitted an android unit to a discovery. They said the internal mic was useless, and you should get one with an external mic input

To be fair my GF's bmw one is fine .

This one is on the wrong side ( i imagine this was made for LH cars ) , and only picks up sound if you are literally licking the casing.

I dont believe its right and possibly faulty ,But i have bought a cheap USB omni directional off of eBay, and ill see if that works Smile

My PC Samson one worked fine and sounded great
