Centre display going blank whilst driving

A couple of times in the last couple of weeks the centre display has gone blank whilst driving my 2013 MY L320 HSE. The rest of the features still work - radio, phone etc just a blank centre display scene.

Turn ignition off and straight on doesn't fix it. However, leave turned off for say 15 minutes all is fine when you next start up. Any suggestions what might cause this intermittent problem?

Thank you in advance

Loughren Brothers in Towcester for general stuff come highly recommended. Our local Landrover electrics guru is a chap called Alan Thrower - ALT Automotive. I'm also lead to believe that Bodsy who is the electrics guru of the Disco 3/4 forum has been known to make visits to Northampton in the past 2012 SDV6 HSE (technically its hers)

Thank you for the tip on ALT Automotive. If the unit keeps powering down I'll give Alan a call as he's only 15 miles away.

Loughran Brothers are at the end of the road that leads to my office - so I pass them at least twice a day. Thought they were more mechanical than electrics but I suppose I could drop in and ask..... There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

If it helps, I have an intermittent fault with the display on my 2008 RRS. Just occasionally, on starting, instead of the normal display I get crazy lines like an old out of tune TV. Turning off and restarting does not help, but next time I start up in the course of a normal day's activity, its all back working OK! And, yes even with the crazy display, I still have radio, CD etc functions - just can't see 4x4 display or sat nav.
As its only intermittent, I just live with it. I did ask the question on here some time ago whether it could be a bad boot up on starting and that perhaps a new sat nav disk might cure it but someone suggested I needed to replace the head unit. Robin

The reason the fault won’t clear straight away is that the entertainment system will only shut down after something like 10 minutes. Then it will reset. It sounds like the screen is being shutdown to protect the system. Have you checked for DTCs? 2012 5.0 SC AB

Had the codes read by dealer and nothing showing. Could it be the battery if on start up the drain on power for the starter is causing a 'wobble' (tech term) on the control system for the entertainment system?

So far in the last month its only had this fault four times so its no biggy just a niggle ... unless it gets worse.

In your first post you said it went blank when driving rather than on startup so a fading battery wouldn’t have that effect on it.

If there are no DTCs then I would suspect that possibly somethings happening that is designed to occur but not at that time. By that I mean something like a bad on/off button. The system has a simple on/off button and it’s not clever enough to know a spring has failed and the button turns the system off when the car goes over a bump rather than human pressing it. I can’t think of anything on the late L320 that would do that though. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Sorry Brit Plumber - my explanation at the outset was not quite right. The unit fails to start (not even showing the usual 'Range Rover' logo) when I get in to start up. Have yet to check whether it has failed upon entry to the vehicle or after trying to crank the engine. I am now trying to be more observant each time I get in but it hasn't shown the fault since Friday.

The result is that I drive off with no display though - hence the display remain blank whilst I am driving. Sorry for the confusion Smile

Silverstone, I have had very good feedback about a small LR specialist garage in Rushden called RM Motors.

I have never used them myself, but a few folk with older Land Rovers / Range Rovers who I have chatted to speak highly of them, especially when it comes to fault finding and car electrics.
