Ah, OK. Wink

A 12,000 lb winch is probably the thick end of 5 kW so would probably require 70 mm² cable to handle the 400 (or more) Amps.

I'd check the numbers as it depends on whether the rating is achieved through motor or gearing

I have a FROM Edge 12.5K on the D2 and the stall current is 357 Amps - the 9.6K is 329 Amps same motor in both but gearbox is different

Now the amount of times you would stall a winch is pretty low on a 12.5K winch (and still fairly low on a 9.6K winch) but I would argue the difference there is not whats deciding your cable sizes - that should be the acceptable transmission loss at somewhere around 350a for the above two examples.

On my D2 i'm on 70mm2 cable battery to solenoid to winch and fused at 400 amps so I'm over cabled, fused appropriately and all good. I could drop the fuse to 350 (and probably will) when i remember or even as low as 300 amps as blow rating is twice continuous current on most fuses 2012 SDV6 HSE (technically its hers)

Sorry only just seen this! Embarassed there are several options available.

1: Warn External Winch tray as fitted to mine. They are exactly the same tray as a Disco 3 and 4, but you will need the tray and all the associated brackets. I then used a Warn 9.5 XP Synthetic winch, Warn solenoid and Warn cabling for a wireless or cable remote to be used. The trays do occasionally come up for sale on fleebay. This was the set up used on the G4 challenge cars built by Land Rover and is still available new.

2: Devon 4x4 do a discrete Winch mount that sits behind the front bumper, i have never looked to much at this option as i dont like the idea of the Winch being hidden, and not easily being able to clean the winch after being caked in mud. Also the change over spooling leaver is buried in the front bumper so if it somehow became damaged it wouldn’t be easily accessible if you needed it. Also you cannot cover the winch when not in use as its behind the bumper.

The next problem you have is winch guards, as no one makes these for a Facelift car. Mine was an original Mantec guard that came off a Facelift Land Rover Experience car, i then modified it to suit my external set up on the Facelift car.

Im sure i done abit of a write up after completion so will see if i can find the thread Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Not 'plug-and-play', then!

Killer question - how often have you used it in anger? Very Happy

Been used for recovery of others more than myself, but for me the main reason for fitting was for solo trips abroad, so i know I can get myself out of trouble should i need too. Also makes a good parking aid Laughing Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

I'd agree with the winch being for others mainly. problem is seldom do you want to pull yourself forward , further into what you got stuck in.

The winch is really only on my D2 for when we're solo with the trailer as being pulled backward is not really an option.

Doesn't stop me working out how to put one on her RRS though Smile 2012 SDV6 HSE (technically its hers)

I've just fitted an el cheapo RAI clone on my "classic" (i.e., pre-facelift) car, partly because a day on a dusty Salisbury Plain left the air-box absolutely full of Censored (and because it looks 'cool').

In terms of water-proofing, the only time I have been slightly worried in my pre-RAI car was when crossing a river with a slight current coming from the driver's side, at the depth of the side vent and thus potentially into the air intake.

Various expensive electronic bits will be ruined before it becomes a true snorkel!

Similar thing to be honest. when in the Alps/Cevenne/Piedmont last year the RAI on the Disco saved me having to do a filter swap over the weeks we were away. 2012 SDV6 HSE (technically its hers)
