Upgraded High Output Alternator

From all the forum posts and my cars inability to charge the battery properly it is likely that my driving habit (2 trips of 10km, total of 20km per day) is not adequate to fully charge the battery in my car. Having to plug is a trickle charger each day to bring the battery upto full charge seems rediculous not to mention a pain.

Upgraded high output alternators available for my 2010 TDV8 in 240 amp and 320 amp output versions.

Has anyone done this upgrade and is it likely to improve battery charging so that the battery is fully charged on a daily basis.

No, it just takes time for the battery to charge. There's power available, but nothing can get around the time issue of short journeys. It's like chargers - a bigger charger can charge a bigger battery, but it won't charge a smaller battery faster because the battery isn't designed to do such. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Once the car is started it should be running off power generated by the alternator not the battery (I assume as this is the traditional way alternators work).

If the current draw when running is close to the capacity of the alternator then a high capacity alternator should solve the problem.

My regular starts include starting (less than 1 second) I very rarely see a cold start signal (i.e. no glow plugs). Seriously how much drain from the battery can there be. So the power draw from the battery shold only be during starting.

I would like to know what maximum current is sent to the battery for recharging if such a criteria exists.

I have two other vehicle which go through the same driving cycle and none exhibit the battery problem of the RRS.

Hi, just thought I might be able to help with this one.
Yes the short trips would not be helping but what type & capacity is your battery ?
We down under have found that the RRS uses power even when switched off to run some of the accessories.
Our solutions included having the existing battery checked and/or buying a new one with the largest capacity that will fit.
In addition I have added a solar panel to the system to keep the charge up to the battery as I often don't use the RRS for up to a month at a time. Idea
This could be a problem if you have the RRS garaged during the day or live in Parts of the world where sunlight is at a premium.
P.s. There are kits that you permantely wire in or go thru the trailer plug. 2006 4.2 S/C with Tow Pack, Side Steps, DRL's, 19" & 20" wheels, additional 110 ltr Fuel Tank Roof Rack and performance mods.

A bigger alternator won't help, unless your short trips involve having the climate control on Max. or loads of heaters on.

Better spending money on a CTEK charger or bigger battery (assuming it would fit!) or new battery.

Check current drain to ensure there isn't a fault (e.g boot switch)
