+1 for the Boxster S 3.2 litre. We had one until the wee fella arrived... fabulous car to drive
& way better than the 2.7litre version. That said, Mrs E really loves her Freelander 2 which
replaced the Boxster. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Others may disagree but I don't find the RRS a good car for kid carrying - smaller kids will struggle to get in and out due to the height, the doors don't open as far as some other cars and the seat cars and general finish are not as robust as other cars and tends to show wear & tear quickly.

Kids also struggle with the tailgate - in terms of which button, weight opening and then reaching to close. Those that can reach usually end up slamming it closed due to the weight! I have to get out everytime Rolling Eyes

Well, had a slight change of mind and picked up an E46 BMW 320ci Auto (53 plate with 14k miles, 2.2L 6 cylinder).

Its not quick, its so so on fuel (approx 30mpg combined) but its very comfortable to drive, drives like new, is automatic and has all the toys I would want for the trip to work.

Very happy with it.

I have recently moved house and have a 50 mile round trip commute. Nice easy commute on M25 and M3 and traffic flowed well today on the way in. Took me about 45 mins (6:30am) so missed the traffic. Don't want to be doing this commute each day in the RRS, so looking for a 2nd car.

I've looked through my usual suspects; Golf R32 or a GTI. Have also looked at some different ideas; Boxster 986 2.7 and an E46 M3.

£10k budget and must be below 50k miles with a FSH. Prefer a trade sale for finance and warranty etc.

Any others to consider?

Its not a massive commute, so not necessarily needing to go down the diesel route...

2003 986 Boxster S, night and day different from the 2.7 (in my opinion) and for £10k they are an absolute bargain.

Bought one back in March for a bit of summer fun and ended up keeping it as the Mrs loves it so much. Engines are bulletproof and surprisingly decent load space with front and rear boots. (we spent 3 weeks camping around Italy without an issue and my other half definitely does not travel light!)

Had an E46 M3 a few years back and although a fantastic car was very expensive to keep.

I think those Boxters are a waste of space....I had a Z3M Convertable a few years back now that was a drive!!! A boxter will always be looked upon as a poor mans porsche.... I would take a million other cars before that.... even a Bmw 335 would be a better choice.

The Boxster is widely regarded as one of the best sports car of its generation!! I can't remember the last serious magazine review where the Z3M beat the Boxster.

And as for a poor man's Porsche, that's just funny. Presumably you drive a poor man's Range Rover?

The coupe version of the Boxster, the Cayman, was effectively knobbled by Porsche to stop it running rings around the 911.

And no, I don't (nor have I ever) own a Boxster...did look at the 996 Turbo before buying the RRS though... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Mate are you joking??? Show me one review which says the Boxter is better than any M BMW!!!

Look at the stats: http://www.zeperfs.com/en/duel120-314.htm

The worst thing is people driving Boxters think they are driving a fast sports car but they are not... it's performance for that type of a vehicle is poor.... my M5 used to blow their doors off and I would have 4 passengers Laughing Laughing Laughing [/url]

Ah, now I understand your position. You think that one car is better than another purely because it is faster on the stopwatch in a straight line.

I can't explain to you how a beautifully handling car is so much fun to drive even though it's not the quickest thing on sale. The way it flows down a road, breathing with the tarmac yet isolating the larger imperfections, transmitting the little nuances of changing grip through the the wheel and seat. How it changes line with subtle throttle use (or hangs its tail out with coarse applications of power), how it tiptoes in to corners on a trailing brake, seeming to pivot around the gearlever, before settling on to the outside rear wheel as you bring in the power.

The truly great cars are quick from A to B not because of their power but because the car, as a whole, is perfectly matched. You can use all it has to give and know that it is with you all the way. It thrills without scaring you.

You either get it or you don't. With due respect, I'm guessing you don't Wink

One of the best "fun" cars I've had recently was a Suzuki Swift Sport. Quick? Not especially (0-60 in 8 or 9s). Powerful? Nope (124bhp). Did people say "great car!"? Nope. Did it make me feel like a tarmac stage rally driver on every trip? Yep. Did I enjoy every trip in it no matter how mundane? Oh yes! Why? See above.

Likewise the 309GTi I had many years ago. Better in every regard (except looks) than the much more popular 205GTi. Why? Because it was a better handling car. Faster? Nope. As quick if not quicker cross country? Yes. Why? Because it didn't try to stick you in a hedge backwards if you chickened out in a seriously committed corner, for one thing. A friend had an Escort RS Turbo at the same time (as an aside, it had the worst brakes I've ever used on a car). Quicker in a straight line? Oh yes! Did it hold me up in the twisties? Oh yes! No unfortunately you do not get it.. for handling a Z3M without traction control was a beast around a track or a straight line, please just sit in one and you may see my point.... Most M cars will go down in history the E60 M5 is a piece of magic.... you are talking about peogeouts above which don't rock my boat.... yes back in the day they were good at what they did but if we are talking about handling and speed and engineering greats then BMW M cars will always be up there! A Boxter will not go down in the history books... fact.
