Shopping for a 2nd car... Ideas?

I have recently moved house and have a 50 mile round trip commute. Nice easy commute on M25 and M3 and traffic flowed well today on the way in. Took me about 45 mins (6:30am) so missed the traffic. Don't want to be doing this commute each day in the RRS, so looking for a 2nd car.

I've looked through my usual suspects; Golf R32 or a GTI. Have also looked at some different ideas; Boxster 986 2.7 and an E46 M3.

£10k budget and must be below 50k miles with a FSH. Prefer a trade sale for finance and warranty etc.

Any others to consider?

Its not a massive commute, so not necessarily needing to go down the diesel route...

I see from your profile you have an SC RRS?

If it's a 50 mile commute on decent roads its going to cost you circa 12 quid a time, a five day week is 60 quid which will take you to around £3k fuel a year. A Golf GTI will only do 34mpg (we have one) on a run so you wont actually gain much in the mpg stakes plus you have a £10k outlay on the car, plus insurance, tax repairs and servicing etc Shocked

I really wouldn't bother mate, major false economy.

How much did you pay for the RRS? low 20's? Even if you consider depreciation with mileage etc I still think it will be a waste of money.

Of course, if you just WANT a 2nd car for the hell of it ignore what I've just said Very Happy

I've had an E46 M3, it's not cheap to run, it will actually cost more than your RRS!

I really wouldn't bother mate Thumbs Up

ok, re-read my initial post and missed out a key detail... Embarassed the 2nd car is needed, so there is a car at home for ferrying the kids to school etc while I have one at work. I can get a car for the school run, or a car to commute in. Preference is for the commuting car so the bigger car is available for the kids.

Previously I commuted on the tube, but will be driving now, hence the need for 2 cars in the house. Its not a way of trying to save money.

At the moment, I am swaying towards a GTI.

I'd still use the RRS for the commute as it will give you a decent mpg, if you use it for pottering round with the kids it will be awful!

The GTI is a cracking car, we opted for the DSG and it flies!

cant beat a good old golf GTI, if you can find a little more than 10k a Scirocco could be a good choice. Its twice the car the Golf is and they are still managing to hold thier money well unlike the MK5 GTI at the moment which is suffering as a result of the MK6 coming out a few years ago, positive side there are a few bargains to be had on MK5's as a result.

If you want any figures on retail or trade for specific cars give me a shout Thumbs Up

2003 986 Boxster S, night and day different from the 2.7 (in my opinion) and for £10k they are an absolute bargain.

Bought one back in March for a bit of summer fun and ended up keeping it as the Mrs loves it so much. Engines are bulletproof and surprisingly decent load space with front and rear boots. (we spent 3 weeks camping around Italy without an issue and my other half definitely does not travel light!)

Had an E46 M3 a few years back and although a fantastic car was very expensive to keep.

Buy a car for the school run. Buy a Skoda Octavia estate. Swallow kids and all of the associated "stuff" with ease. And will give decent mileage returns too. You might find a vRS which is basically the Golf GTi in disguise.

That way you can enjoy the RRS every day! Thumbs Up

not a fan of the Octavia unfortunately.

Anyone with experience of the Golf GT (in either 1.4 or the diesel variety)?

1.4 petrol GT is pretty good car, although u need to get the newer mk5 TSI, its a std 140 BHP but with a remap can jump up to 200BHP which is the same as a std GTI Laughing

Diesel GT's are in abundance, sport models and the newer Diesel engine variety are the ones to go for.

Fair enough. We have the 105bhp 1.9 TDi estate. Sure, it's no sports car (but more fun than the Mk4 Golf we had) but it's a good load lugger and gives excellent mpg returns. And it's cheaper than the VW or Audi equivalent for the same bit of kit (except the badge of course). Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
