just fitter a new quick fit sump to my 2008 RRS which came with 7lts of oil, on measuring the oil that came out, there's only 5lts the box as no leaks, should I put in the other 2lts in or is 7lts for doing a complete oil change also I have just heard that if you change the oil, being new the detergent in it, can dislodge any s**t in the box, and cause problems and were do you refill it at, I found a blanking plug on the o/s just above the sump ?

If you just drain the oil by undoing the drain plug, only about a half (to a quarter) of the oil will come out. To completely drain it, the gearbox needs to be run and cycled through the gears. The spec for the ZF 6HP26 (as fitted to the 2.7 diesel), has a capacity of 9.5 litres.
A dealer, or independent garage should be able to do a "double flush" which will be more effective.

As for dislodging any sludge, there seems to be an even split of opinion on whether to do the oil change. But if it's done early enough, there shouldn't be a problem. My local LR indie said LR now recommend a gearbox oil change at 75K miles.

I've just had mine done at a cost of about £300.

It's fill to spill as long as it's at the correct temperature (and engine running, and you've cycled through the gear positions) - around 35 degrees is ideal IIRC. Around 5l is normal though.

If there's any in the box, you have problems already. On high mileage boxes, changing the fluid can reveal issues that were otherwise masked by contamination from the stator bush.  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

BlueIcePlus - if you are going to work on your own vehicle you need to read the workshop manual first so you know what you are doing. The way you are going about it you will do damage to your vehicle.

What Lost for Words has outlined is the summary of how to do but please read the process in the workshop manual (relevant section on Topix) first.

I used Tim Fry Landrovers in Cheltenham. They seem pretty good.

I had a mega flush on the gearbox yesterday arranged by gilly, the mega flush removes all oil from gearbox and puts in about 11-12 litres
