Hi Guys

Recently when I apply my hand brake then release the brake pedal there is an extremely loud squeeling noise coming from the back right side. Has anyone any idea of what this could be at all?

Hi Darren, yes this is the dreaded Parking Brake control module. I've just gone through this myself and you will see previous and a current post on it. It's worth looking at previous posts to get an idea.

If you have a good indie that you use, I would get it to them asap as you may be lucky and be able to fix it before more damage is done which can lead to needing new rear disks, pads, shoes and module which usually comes in about £1200!!

My Indi has managed to salvage my parking brake module which saved me £600 but he still needs to change the discs, pads and shoes due to the damage already done.

I recently just purchased this car privately as sell, and the brakes were done only 8 months ago according to invoices

I’ll get it in ASAP doesn’t help with the dreaded Christmas around the corner

You may be lucky and not have damaged the discs, lets hope so if they've just been done.
And if you're really lucky your EPC module maybe salvageable.
If I were you, I'd put some tape over the handbrake switch so you don't put it on automatically because from what I've read, once it starts making that noise it won't fix itself and then could jam on permanently!

Also worth stating, if you don't already, find yourself a really good LR indy, not just a mechanic. These vehicles are extremely complex and sensitive beasts!

Thanks Scrumpy, i haven't been using it. I have sent a few messages to RR specialists within my area. Not just a mechanic, see what they say

I don't get how the discs, pads and shoes are damaged through a broken EPB actuator?

The only thing I assume is that the disc and shoes are forcibly damaged during removal as a result of not being able to get the EPB into service mode. The pads however are completely separate and removed via removal of the caliper. If the discs are being replaced it would be a good idea to replace the pads also, but they won't be ruined as a result of a broken EPB actuator.

The EPB should be checked and adjusted at regular intervals to ensure reliable operation. If left, as Scrumpy says, it can break. What usually happens is that the gears strip within the actuator itself. A new actuator is not necessarily needed to resolve the issue, however. A rebuild kit can be purchased to rebuild the actuator. The part number is DA9223. It's about £75. Kev

I completely agree with scrumpy,, he's right on the money with what he says,,, I know as I've also even down that road. You say the brakeswere done 8 months ago,,, depends what that actually consisted of, if it was a case of new pads chances are the parking brake wasn't touched. Big enemy of the EPB is poorly serviced shoes,, they need to be cleaned and adjusted correctly at every service to keep them working,, which involves removing the discs. I will get it in asap. Its only made the noise twice so fingers crossed.

You may well get away with a strip and adjust if it's not been ignored (fingers crossed).

Agreed. It's best to not use the EPB until it's fixed.

Thanks guys i have a friend who is a mechanic for a dealership who's states he can strip this and have a look as stated above. So may have a go at that and potentially save £££

If it's squealing then it's likely that a strip and clean of the rear brakes will sort it. May need new hand brake linings / disc too. But unlikely to be the EPB module itself. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I think in my case, the rear nearside shoes had been gauging the inside of the hub (sorry, I might be wrong, I've only seen pictures so far). The disc had a big groove in it so might be separate to the handbrake issue.

The indy showed me pictures that there was nothing left on the nearside rear shoe, it was down to the metal.

As you say, it should be part of a service but I don't recall it being adjusted in previous services. I will check the history and make sure to insist in future! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue
