Possible oil leak from left bank, help!

Hello all,

Getting a little paranoid about my 2012 RRS S/C.

I have filmed a video "attached" i was hoping someone on here who know's these cars could tell me if it sounds right.
(sorry forget this, it won't allow me to upload the video sadly)

If you listen very closely you can hear an occasional knocking sound! is this normal? (sorry i know the sound quality isn't great).

I have also just discovered an oil leak for the first time in 2 years of ownership. I don't think this has anything to do with the slight knocking sound (also i can't hear this knocking when inside the car).

The leak appears to be possibly coming from the left bank and dripping down, i've drawn a circle around the area i think its coming from and i've also drawn red lines around cables and pipes att the bottom that are now covered in oil. It's only coming out very subtly has there's no oil on the floor yet, its just collecting in the plastic cover under the car. I'm now having sleepless nights, as i stopped paying my extended warranty last year so if this turns into a big issue. I'll be in trouble Big Cry

I know it's probably to hard to tell from these images, but if you any of think you might know the issue of the oil leak or noise and rough cost to repair that would be amazing.

Ps i checked oil level this morning and its still full and there's no engine warning light on yet.

Thank you to anyone who replies.

so the oil leak on the first picture, just appears to be a cam cover gasket.
Not a major worry.

regarding the noise, if you are able to remove the belts and then start the car and see if the noise has gone.

First remove supercharger belt, and start car.
If that doesn't help, remove the other belt. run car for a minute or so max

Hi Andy, thanks so much for replying. Ahh ok, that doesn't sound so bad. Do you have a rough ball park figure how much a independent specialist would charge for a cam cover gasket change?

I would love to be able to get into the engine and be able to remove the belts. As i would love to remove all the rust off the bolts holding the pulleys on. I have tools, but i think this is sadly prob beyond my mechanical knowledge to do this Sad

I would love to find a land rover ex dealer mechanic that does freelance work for cash etc, if anyone knows of one in the east london area. Please let me know. 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

Maybe 1.5 hours to change gasket on 4.2

As yours in a 5 litre which I think has injectors on the cam cover a lot more work

Search for cam chains ( or chain rattle) on here and see if that is the noise you have (on 5 litre models )

I think you will find you may have to remove the Supercharger on a 5.0L to gain access to the cam cover inner retaining bolts, there is also a special tool to align the cover when refitting. Could also check for any excessive backlash in the s/c nose cone as the tvs1900 s/c did suffer a bit with wear in the torsional isolator coupling and spring which I believe made a rattling knocking noise. If you remove the s/c belt not to difficult to do, should be able confirm if that is the noise though.

Cheers

Thanks both for replying. Wow you guys are so knowledgeable. If this was your car would u attempt to try an replace the gasket yourself or would I give to a independant specialist?

Also would you get this delt with straight away or could it be driven for a while & just top up oil when needed? as my Finacials are in a mess at the moment due to the pandemic etc

I might do some research online to see if anyone shows you have remove the belts to start with!
Thanks again for help 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

I recently replaced both the accessories and supercharger belts on mine, S/C one is easy as comes off first, just had a read of the Powertrain section of the W/Shop manual for the 5.0L S/C engine first.

I think my priority would be the knocking noise, if it is by any chance the S/C and it has to come off you could do the cam cover then if it is the source of the leak, if the knock/rattle is timing chain tensioners it will probably all have to come apart anyway. They did supposedly fit modified tensioners after Vin No. CA393639 so if you are prior to that it could be the start of the tensioners wearing so would probably be advisable to do them now before it develops into something more serious, just out of interest what is your mileage?

Cheers

Hi Col, thanks again for always replying, i wish i could find a way to upload or send you the video, the knocking sound is very faint. But i don't remember hearing this in the past.

Yes my VIN is after the one you mentioned below Big Cry .

Milage is only 67k and i only drove it 3k in the whole year last year, will probably less this year.

Its going to Les Pauls Independent JLR specialist in 2 weeks for it's 135,000 mile service (just oil, filter and pollen). So i will probably get them to check out the leak and tapping/knocking noise then.

When i stopped the LR extended warranty i kept paying the same amount into an account, but i don't think i have enough probably to cover this.

I wish it could have hung on till next year when i would need to get all the belts changed etc at the 150,000 service. But life rarely plays ball.

I might try and buy a W/Shop manual for the 5.0L S/C engine/car, because i would love to understand this engine / car. And i want to keep it for years to come, so i really need to learn to work on it, to be able to afford to keep it on the road. 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

Hi Col, my vin says something like CA7odd I’ll find full number when I get in if it helps?

No work shop manual yet, it’s on my list of thing I need to buy.

I so wish I could do this work myself

Embarassed Really sorry my mistake the the vin. I quoted is for the fullfat, it should have been CA759577 for the Sport, if after that it should hopefully have the modified tensioners.

You don't have to buy the w/shop manual, you can download it for free.

As I had nothing better to do during Lockdown here, I simply used Adobe Acrobat and using bookmarks etc. recreated all the different sections and sub sections into one complete easy to navigate PDF file, few clicks of the mouse and can get pretty much near what you want, but that was for the 2010-2013 model, also created a PDF of the owners manual at the same time. If you want the w/s manual it is here.

Hi Col,

Sorry i couldn't reply last night.

Thank you so much for the manual, that is incredibly generous of you Thumbs Up . πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ» You are a legend.

If there is anyway you could please send me a PDF of the owners manual as well that would be amazingly handy to not have to dig out my book each time i want to look something up. But if you don't have time, totally understand.

Its amazing! You could be reading it for days.

I uploaded the 10second video of the engine noise to WeTransfer and put link below. If you get a second. I would love your opinion on it. Massively appreciated if you get time.

https://we.tl/t-CHV35CwMRX

Also my Vin is: CA740385 so it could well be the tensioners like you mentioned, as it looked like my car was built before they added the modified tensioners Big Cry

Finally do you have any photos of your RRS online anywhere or insta account with it? Would love to see some images, is yours a 5.0 S/C ? 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

Time is something I have quite a bit off these days as called it a day and decided to retire to NZ. Laughing Try this link to the Owners Manual, it is for the MY2012-2013 as the MY2010-2011 did have a couple of minor differences I believe.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r61UP5IWg...sp=sharing

Yes I do have a 5.0L S/C Autobiography, fortunately the Vin. begins DA so hopefully not tempting fate and will be ok with the tensioners.

You can view a few photos here if you wish just click on photo to enlarge, they do have the mandatory rubbish bin in the back ground Laughing, car's not everybody's cup of tea, especially "the die hard purist brigade" I'm sure but hey-ho who cares.

Whilst I'm not a big fan of black cars (wash it, drive it; dirty again Sad ), I do think the interior provides a nice contrast and can't see how anyone could object. And I'm loving the registration number Thumbs Up

Wow Col,

You've done very well for yourself. Retiring to NZ and having all day to spend tinkering with the RRS πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ» that is the dream.

Stunning version. I was desperately trying to find a 2012/13 S/C version in black with cream leather & piano black trim and OEM LR screens in headrests, but had to give up looking in the end. As so hard to come buy. So well done sir finding one Thumbs Up unless you spec'd it from new?

Its absolutely mint as well.

Super jealous, that's my dream car right there!

Love the subtle mods as well, love the thicker steering wheel, but keeping the original badges and pedal covers, lovely wing mirrors to, did they come as part of the body kit? Did you have this fitted by a company?

Also you got drilled disks as well πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ that was something i want to add when i need to change them, could you please tell me what brand these are? Also what pads are you using? Do you get any break squeal?

Thanks so much for the owner manual, this is so helpful to have to hand on the laptop, so thank you again massively appreciated.

Just going back to the cam / valve cover leak. This is def where my leak is coming from. Just found this video on you tube, this guy reckons the dealers want 10k engine out to do them & an indy around 4k Big Cry but he managed to do it him self for $300, but it looks insanely hard and took him days.
