Replacing rear discs

Just wondering if someone could straighten me out, please?

I'm going to change the rear discs on our 2012 TDV6. I've watched a few youtube videos and had a read of the brake bible.

But, I'm confused with EPB. Instructions show releasing the EPB using a screwdriver and manipulating the ratchet, to allow for getting the disc off.

Why would I need to do this, if I didn't engage the EPB in the first place? (we very rarely use it, just rely on the gearbox Park)

Am I missing something? Less is more, more or less

Well at the very least there will be a lip on inside of the drum.
If you were to try to pull it off, the shoes would catch on this.

Same applies if you don't have EPB.

It's to create extra clearance

Thanks Andy.

Why would there be a lip? I can't quite see how there would be wear on the pads or disc as it's a park brake.

Does the park brake automatically engage when the ignition is off? Less is more, more or less

I know it sounds odd, but you will get a lip on a used disc.

manual Disco's can automatically engage the EPB at key removal.

Strangely enough just in the process of changing my MY13 rear discs and park brake shoes etc. followed Bodsys Brake Bible to the letter and it was spot on, just backed the adjuster right off through the hole in the disc, quick smack with a dead blow hammer and disc dropped straight off, only small lip on the drum bit and think that is mainly rust scale not wear. The pain bit looks to be the "bedding in" process for the new shoes/discs. The park brake will not engage automatically when switching ignition off unless it has been activated that way in the CCF files, but if you remove the EBC fuse in the engine bay fuse box it isolates it anyway.

Cheers

When I replaced my rear discs, I remember I had to back off the adjuster. I also followed Bodsy's bible and it was spot on Thumbs Up Kev

Kev, how did you get on bedding the shoes in as suggests need to do that even if you fit just new discs, or did you not really bother? and just settle for the adjustment.

Thanks for replies.

I guess what's confusing me is when the instructions show turning the hub to line the ratchet hole up, surely the EPB is off to allow the hub to be turned, so why wind the ratchet off?

The lip on the inside of the drum answers that, I guess. Less is more, more or less

In the normal operating position the brake shoes are right up on the drum to ensure full activation when applied - this may mean the shoes can touch the drum causing wear. Likewise dirt in the drum will grind away at the drum causing wear. Likewise using the drive through function to release the park brake will cause wear as the auto brake release function has a little lag with the vehicle attempting to move before the brake being fully released.

This can all cause wear of the drum which the shoes account for - it may develop a lip and make the drum hard to get off but in my view the issue is when you put a new drum on that it has no wear (or you put new shoes on as they wear) and the shoes' adjustment needs to be done - not something you want top do with the drum off .

Hi Col, I didn't replace the shoes as they were fine. i just gave the whole disc and the inside of the drum a good clean then set the knurled adjuster as per the bible. Kev
