TRICKLE CHARGING

may seem like a dumb question but has anyone connected something more permanent to charging points in engine bay to make easier to connect when needed

Fitted this on my RRS1 don't even need to bend down or unlock car to connect or unplug it, also fitted Anderson connector under the bonnet to connect charger to.

Cheers

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

There is an option with the Land Rover branded charger to have a permanent socket fitted in the grille (I had one on my first Evoque, fitted by JLR gratis trying to stop the battery from flattening in 3 days) so it is possible but I don’t know if any other trickle chargers can be supplied with one. I posted a thread about how to connect up an L494 to a solar panel trickle charger a couple of years ago. I know someone who garages their X5 for 6 months at a time and they have mounted their solar panel outside the garage and extended the cabling to the crocodile clips and that works well. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I considered this before I bought my RRS as it's not driven every day, so would be left connected to a C-Tek in the garage for most of the week. However, it's so quick to just connect the crocodile clips to the under-bonnet boost points that it just isn't worth the effort of cobbling any alternative up. 2013 L494 5.0 SC in Chile Red

Like Col, I use the Ctek comfort connector. His is below the screen, whilst mine is inside the front valance, under the number plate, connected to the charging point under the bonnet. This way, there are no wires rubbing against your paintwork & like his, means you can connect it up while the car is locked & you do not have to open the bonnet to connect & disconnect. Just slip it back into the area behind the valance when not in use

did you just make up your own connections to connect to points under bonnet or can you buy something to do the job

You need the M8 size eyelets. If using the comfort connector on the front valance like I have shown, the cables need to be extended. As far as I know the connector cable only comes in one length.
Other point to watch is the connector studs under the bonnet is not a screw thread You need 2 hose clamps size 7mm-9mm dia
to clampdown on the eyelets. Also you need to make a small cutout on the plastic cover which covers the positive terminal so that it closes when the cables have been connected.

I also use the 13 pin tintenter connection to keep what I think is the main battery (starter) topped off. Not sure which battery the caravan/trailer socket perminent live is connected to. There are two batteries on mine (2016 MY), the aux battery used for the computers during start and engine not running conditions is not connected to the main starter battery circuit for recharging until the engine is running and when the main start battery voltage is high enough, then a contactor closes and allows the aux battery to charge up too. (seen on FFRR site they have a supercapacitor instead of an aux battery from some time in 2016 65 plate onwards so may not have the same charging issue as with twin batteries)
With ref to my RRS, the studs in the engine compartment are for jump starting and thus are the main starter battery in the wheel well.
The circuit diagram I have from the 2014 US version of L494 implies that maintenance charging the main battery will not maintain the aux battery in the rear side panel.

Update: 23 Oct 2019 - established that my aux battery connects as above, i.e. only when engine running, so added a separate maintenance charger to it and put the plug by the boot lashing eye so wire escape under the tailgate seal.
