Battery swap

Hi all, I'm changing my car tomorrow and since I have an almost new battery on my old 2007 TDV8 they're letting me swap it with the one in the replacement 2010 facelift TDV8. It's being done at a non LR garage so do is there any procedure that should be followed that is specific to a RR Sport? Will anything need re-setting? Thanks all Thumbs Up

The new one will need the Battery Monitoring System (BMS) resetting with a diagnostic tool, nothing special required on the old vehicle. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Blimey thanks Lost for Words. Glad I asked. Its not a JLR garage so I reckon I'll let sleeping dogs lie and take the new car with its present battery Confused

I don't want to sound rude but isn't it a bit "tight" to want to swap batteries when trading and changing a car? If I was buying your old car, I would be annoyed to fi d out that it had been swapped.

Its not just the £200 odd quid, it's the hassle of a flat battery in the morning that happened to me 2 months ago. The dealer is fine with it as its going to auction Thumbs Up

TBH, I'd just swap them over. When these cas get a few years older, do you think the average halfords will be resetting the car for a new battery? Bodsys Brake Bible

Many thanks Bodsy, and SRE for the photo - just looked and my 07 TDV8 battery is exactly that...AGM. I don't want to appear tight, but having given the car new discs, pads, battery and B service 8 weeks ago, the dealer offered back the battery as part of the deal. Thanks again chaps Thumbs Up

What does BMS do and why does a battery swap require a plug in on later cars? Visitor from fullfatrr.com

Essentially it estimates the battery state of charge. It's mainly there to allow the use of a stop-start system. It was developed over the MYs, and I understand early versions have had a few issues, causing low battery warnings etc. For a real expert, Robbie is probably the best person to ask on things battery and electrical. Wink

In practice, I imagine it doesn't cause issues to not reset it, but it's possible that it might mean the battery doesn't get used to it's full potential - would probably be down to the state fo charge of each battery at the time of the swap. Perhaps it would be a good measure to fully charge both batteries if they are to be swapped without a reset?

Hi guys,

The BMS we use here does essentialy the same. We measure static voltage, running voltage and compare figures when some functions operates. This allows battery condition to be calculated. Then as you say, battery warnnings can be used correctly and not false alarms during cranking etc.
It also allows stop start to be dissabled during a battery charging phase.

Does it not also help to manage the load on the alternator in cold weather and shut down heavy consumers to save heavy load on the alternator and enhance fuel economy when warming up the engine? I've had lots and lots of BMS system problems in Evoques, especially very rapid battery discharge (like flat in 3 days and nobody can say why) which resulted in the car being trailered to the local dealership and placed under observation for 3 weeks to see what heavy users had been discharging the battery. In Land Rover's technical team's view it the 3rd party tracker system but the monitoring proved that was not the cause. I never did find out what was causing the rapid discharge as a combination new software and changing the battery after several replacements went flat with a AGM battery. Voila no more flat batteries. One thing I miss with all recent Land Rover products is that one socket is not left live with the ignition off, I used to use a small £11 Maplin solar panel trickle charger to keep the battery in good condition (and never ever had a flat battery) and one thing that the boffins at LR did in desperation to keep my car's bettery in good nick was to reenable the socket in the centre consol so I could plug in the solar powered trickle charger. It was suggested that I purchase a Land Rover branded battery conditioner which is quite pricey and requires enabling in the car but the draw back is that my car sits on the drive and the battery conditioner needs to be plugged into a mains socket which means having a cable running across the drive for several feet........... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yeah lots of things use the data, like you say turning off the alternator when not required or turning it on during braking to give more engine braking etc.

Thanks all, and like Dr Rob, can anyone tell us what happens if BMS isn't reset on the new car? Question
