EPB Strange Problem

I seem to have an issue with my EPB. Dash gives me a message that I have a Parking brake fault, and I have the red handbrake light illuminated all the time, and an amber warning light too.

The handbrake itself seems to operate correctly, both sides coming on and off, no funny noises.

I put a diagnostic computer on and it has a current fault 'C1A48 Warning Lamp circuit. General electrical failure.'

It happened yesterday after having the car jacked up on one side (removed nearside wheels to be smart repaired) it was jacked up for around 24 hours.

I charged the battery overnight, after reading about rogue faults due to battery. No change.

Disconnected battery for an hour this morning. No change.

Checked fuses, all ok. Was able to use diagnostic tool to calibrate handbrake and level sensors, still no good. The fault itself will not erase and remains on permanently. Incidently, the red handbrake warning light is still illuminated on the dash even though the car was locked up 30 mins ago.

Used the search function, but couldn't find similar problem.

Anyone had this problem before?

Quick update on this, I've fitted a new battery this morning just to rule it out (as it was still on the original one) and it hasn't cured it Big Cry

Anyone have any thoughts on this please?

IIRC blown brake lamps (or possibly any other lamp) throw up faults like this....

So when you clear the fault code with the diagnostic tool it just reappears on the next start? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

@maw Brake lights all work correctly.

@paddi Yes when I try to clear the fault, it reappears straight away on the diagnostic computer, and as soon as I turn the ignition on it tells me there a parking brake fault again. The red handbrake warning light never goes out on the dashboard now, ignition on or off, or even when car locked with keyfob.

Put it on a different diagnostic computer and the fault reads slightly different: C1a48 warning lamp circuit, signal lamp connection failure.

It's making me wonder if it's a fault with the dash itself?

Are they genuine LR bulbs in the brake and indicator lights, I know that people have posted that the electrics can be VERY fussy when it comes to what type of bulbs are replaced. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I don't know whether the bulbs are genuine or not, none have been changed recently though. Just been and checked again that they all work, and they do.

There could be an actual fault with the system (wiring) or sensor...warning lights do sometimes indicate the real problem Thumbs Up not always though Laughing Mike

Think I agree. Sounds like a wiring fault. Perhaps try a search for anything similar to see if there is a common place to find the exact location? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Right I Googled the C1A48 code and found a Landrover Service Bulletin, which basically said the fault was either the Parking Brake Switch, the Instrument Cluster or the wiring inbetween.
I unplugged the Switch, and the warning light still stayed on permanently, leaving me to presume cluster or wiring.
Is the instrument cluster a common fault? Amongst all the common faults that are well documented, never heard the cluster was one?

Having no idea how its wired...surely if you unplug the switch then it will be a permanent fault anyway.

If you plug in your software and its a good one, you should be able to test the switches in a few seconds. Mike

I agree that if the switch is unplugged it may then log a fault, but one of the issues I have is the 'handbrake on' warning light on the dash, even when I lock the car. I'm thinking if the switch was causing that, unplugging it would make the light go off.
It makes sense in my puddled brain anyway Rolling with laughter

Did you find the full text of the TSB? Asking because they usually have full instructions. Googling the TSB number sometimes finds the full text. You'll get there in the end so keep going! 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

The system will check the switch - if the switch is not there or faulty it will indicate a fault and you get the light, so either way unplugging will not ID the fault. Unplug and test the switch separately would

What diagnostic system are you using? Mike

Update - I've got this fixed! Traced the wiring back to the n/s/r wheelarch where the wiring loom goes over the chassis and found a wire had rubbed through and must have been earthing out. Cut the wire out and soldered in a new piece, erased the fault and it's all sorted. Chuffed to bits!

PS. Don't know if a mod wants to amend the title of the thread to say its fixed - might help someone else with a similar problem?
