Don't really use my 2008 Specialized Hardrock Sport mountain bike anymore but fancy a decent road bike instead.

Hi JF - The answer would be YES to all the questions but I'm 5'10 and I reckon it'll be too small for you.

Mountain bike frame sizes are generally smaller than racing bikes for a certain height Mine is a 17" which fits my 5'10" perfectly, so I reckon 19" minimum for you. Aluminium frame is a must for lightness and a comfortable frame geometry so its a relaxed ride and you arent too stretched out. Also get one with decent quality components, wheels, gears etc. so it will last OK. Mine ticks all those boxes apart from the size lol! FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy Ex 2006 RRS SC - garbage Ex 2016 135i M Sport - dream car Ex 2003 RS6 Avant - piece of cr*p Ex 2014 320d X Drive, M Sport Touring - ok I guess Ex 2007 RRS TDV8 - bloody loved it EX 2007 FL2 XS - not so bad |

lovely bike, i would suggest though, keeping it and get a road bike through cycle to work scheme (or salary sacrifice if you are self employed) i bought a mountain bike last year, but found out quickly that it is not the kind of thing you want to be going long distances on (i did a 65miler near newcastle, but took hours longer than guys with 700c rims) at the end of last year i bought a rather nice carbon framed bianchi through salary sacrifice, i claimed the vat back, and the rest comes out of my salary monthly for a year at source, saving me nearly half the value of the bike!

Hmmm.....food for thought there Codfather. I'm self-employed, does that help or hinder the scheme? FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

Tim, I did that myself, but when doing big miles on 26" wheels and the gearing all wrong for roads, it can be a bit of a bind!! The weight is anothe thing to consider, a roadbike is a lot lighter than a mountain bike, and it is amazing the difference when going over say 15 or 20 miles.

I'd also recommend changing wheels or tyres; I commute on a hard-tail MTB with no problems having swapped knobbly tyres for a more Tarmac-friendly set. Rack, mudguards and bar extenders help. The Government made the Cycle To Work scheme less attractive last year - see here for one of many articles on such; you'd save more buying a 2010 model from a cycle shop. |

I had thought about new tyres to, but the bike store advised against it for all the reasons Codfather says - gearing, weight etc. I intend doing a few 20-30 mile rides over the summer and a proper road bike really is a must.

Fair enough; my commute is 12 miles total, so not bothered about pushing 3kg more over the distance rather than a new bike, esp. considering carting a good kilo of luggage (iPad, clothes, lunch, tools etc).
