Sorry E, only came back this morning to find this Embarassed

Haven't really got much to add to what's already been said... all the usual stuff has been covered.

Have you done what Kaine and mlines were saying? And tested your laptops right next to the wireless router?

What make are the wireless NICs in your laptops? Are they PC cards that you slot into the side of your laptop or are they integrated into the laptops? I have seen some wireless NICs constantly underperform when manufacturers are mixed - say you have a Linksys wireless router and D-link wireless NICs = hell on earth.

A step towards fixing this, would often be to upgrade both the firmware on the router and the drivers for the wireless NICs. Whenever I roll out wireless networks, I always get routers and NICs from the same mfr - not that it helps you, but just so you can see where my thinking is coming from.

Thanks S for the help, both laptops have built in wireless things , i have moved both laptops close the router and the one still runs slower than the other, but not all the time it does fluctuate and i cant understand it.

Is this just the norm when running two wirless devices, there arnt any other wireless devices close by as i dont have any neibours or any other devices in the house some of my Previous cars

No, it's not the norm... in my home office I run between 4-7 wireless devices through the one wireless router and they all connect at 54Mbps - I rarely get any slowdowns on this side of the router. But all the devices are from the same mfr and I do keep drivers and the router's firmware up to date.

If you only have the slow one connected (i.e. turn off the other laptop), is it still slow?

The one lap top that runs slow doesnt do it when th eother one is turned off, colud it be a fault with the laptop. How do i up date the firm ware, is it just a case of going to there website and down loading any updates

It could be either the laptop or the router, I suppose. Are you sure the wireless configs are the same on each laptop? I'm thinking about the link speed setting... you can either force it to be 11/54/108 etc... or it can be auto. Sometimes auto can be a bit of a pain as it never really settles on the correct speed - best to force it to 54 in that instance, I've always found.

To upgrade the router's firmware, I can't comment on how to do it for your particular router but normally the process is along these lines:

1. Ascertain the model number of your router
2. Go to mfr website and download correct firmware update
3. In the admin tool for your router, there should be an "upgrade router" option or something similar
4. Follow the prompts to upgrade the firmware. n.b. Some routers will only let you do this while physically connected to the router (i.e. wired not wireless).
5. Router will reboot and come back up with new firmware version

Once upgraded, try your laptops again - first nearby the router, then if that is successful start to move away.

You can do that already, if you're all using the same wireless network.

You know how to share folders? And connect to shared folders from other machines?

Smoogle - serious question - how's your VPN knowledge - I have been meaning to set up a VPN between the office and home for a while now, however have a few probs like I use a Dynamic DNS at home, plus am concerned about opening up ports as required - might need to pick your brains if you know about this Thumbs Up
