No, it's not the norm... in my home office I run between 4-7 wireless devices through the one wireless router and they all connect at 54Mbps - I rarely get any slowdowns on this side of the router. But all the devices are from the same mfr and I do keep drivers and the router's firmware up to date.

It could be either the laptop or the router, I suppose. Are you sure the wireless configs are the same on each laptop? I'm thinking about the link speed setting... you can either force it to be 11/54/108 etc... or it can be auto. Sometimes auto can be a bit of a pain as it never really settles on the correct speed - best to force it to 54 in that instance, I've always found. To upgrade the router's firmware, I can't comment on how to do it for your particular router but normally the process is along these lines: 1. Ascertain the model number of your router 2. Go to mfr website and download correct firmware update 3. In the admin tool for your router, there should be an "upgrade router" option or something similar 4. Follow the prompts to upgrade the firmware. n.b. Some routers will only let you do this while physically connected to the router (i.e. wired not wireless). 5. Router will reboot and come back up with new firmware version Once upgraded, try your laptops again - first nearby the router, then if that is successful start to move away. ![]() 2009 Outstanding Contribution Award - Joint Runner Up 2009 'Tech-Head Of The Year' Award - Runner Up Like it here? You can do that already, if you're all using the same wireless network.

Smoogle - serious question - how's your VPN knowledge - I have been meaning to set up a VPN between the office and home for a while now, however have a few probs like I use a Dynamic DNS at home, plus am concerned about opening up ports as required - might need to pick your brains if you know about this |
