Thought some may be interested in this

Over the weekend I went through the process of evaluating the energy consumption in my home - and I am SHOCKED!!!

Current estimated yearly Energy Consumpion is approx - 28700kWh - at first its seems wrong, however I've checked it and its pretty accurate.

Have spent today reviewing what I am going to change - both physical electrical equipment and also how we use the energy, I've given myself a target of 11940kWh

If like me you fancy some motivation to help reduce your energy consumption, then I recommend taking the time to see where you currently waste it - its quite scary and enlightening at the same time.

but my RRS does better mpg than the BM before - so that was an improvement for me

try cavity wall insulation I did and my energy watse whent right down and you can get a grant i found that Home insulation Services were very good it only cost 249 the rest was paid for by Scottsh Power every one can get it just click www.homeinsulationservices.co.uk thank me when its saveing you all money on your energy bills

Kaine, I've had an energy audit done by a friend in March 2006. My house is a 2 bed bunglaow built in 1985, it is "all electric". Some of the points that he raised for me were:

Turn off the tellies, dvd players, hifis and videoplayers and all the computers every night - leaving them on standby means they are fully powered up and ready to go. I was doing this anyway as I don't have a telly so don't have the hassle of resetting the clock on it or the other gear!

Turn down your water heater to 40C-45C

I was looking to change my electric company to a greener supplier (I'm with Scottish Hydro who don't actually use much hydro power these days!) but when I added up how much electricty I use over a year (my TOTAL bill last year was £263!) I found that it wasn't worthwhile changing - everybody else was going to cost me more! Remember I'm only here for 6months a year, but I do heat the house when I'm away in the winter.

I you have an upright type deepfreeze consider changing it for a chest freezer - you don't loose all the coldness every time you open a chest freezer! Also if the freezer is only run partly filled rather than chockablock full fill the empty airspace with bags of polystyrene beads or screwed up newspapers so you don't have to cool that airspace as well, reducing the time the freezer motor runs.

Here is one that saves a heap of energy too - watch how much water you heat whenever you fill a kettle - only fill the kettle with as much water as you need to heat, don't rehat the same water 2-3 times over - If you are only making cuppas for two you will find the kettle boils more quickly too with less water to heat!

Have you checked that any outside lights are not staying on all day as well as all night - replace them with energy saver lamps too if you can, they use less energy and last a lot longer than incandescent lamps (I've just replaced the first ones in my house after 13 years of use!).

At the time the audit was done I was having new double glazing fitted so he couldn't get me on that, but he took one look in the loft and asked when i last replaced the loft insulation or added extra thickness........... although they did ask why i had duvets laid............... I've been recycling old ones as additional loft insulation and probably have the only 13.5 tog rated loft insulation in the country!!

Reduce the time you spend in the shower if it is an instant heat job, cut out one verse of the song you sing in there! You'll save energy and water! My shower is a gravity fed mixer tap drawing from the hot tank so I couldn't do much about that, other than reducing the song by one verse!  2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

to be hoenst the only reason I did this was because I saw our latest electricity bill this week - £438 for the quarter - I dont normally see the house bills, but that shocked me

Plasma is going next week - soon to be replaced with a 1080p LCD - not a big fan of LCD normally, but energy savings are HUGE!!!!
