Can anyone tell me if the battery in the key fob on the RRS 2005 is charged when in use or exactly how it charges ?

The original key charges when it is in the ignition barrel. Which is why it's useful to use the spare key now and then to make sure it's battery is ok. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

As above 100%. Try and rotate your keys rather than using one set and like all batteries there will come a time when it needs replaced. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue. |

Thanks to all that responded . I think the general consensus was correct as after using the apparently "dying" key several times it appears to have charged itself up and I have had no further trouble from it.

One thing to note about the original keys is that each one has its own associated memory settings. So if you use both (as you should to keep the batteries happy) then you may need to set up the seat/mirrors for each key if you have more than one driver.

I know this is an old thread now but after some research I have found an off car solution which is USB and might help someone. If your key isn't charging either because of a fault on the car or a you simply only do short journeys, then there is a way if you aren't afraid to have a play. You need one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141263364239 This is an induction charging coil which is the correct frequency for the key induction circuit. All you need to do is power it from an old USB charging cable with the end cut off and place your key on/in the coil and surprisingly it charges. Not rapidly, granted but it does charge. This test one is not pretty for sure but it would be a minor thing to put it all into a box I reckon. Could be useful for spare keys as well which sit around slowly draining. Yes I know fixing the original issue and rotating keys is the best answer but this is only cost £6 is effortless so is simply an alternative. Might not be useful to anyone but I enjoyed making it regardless. |
