Rear diff pinion seal - leakage and fix

Has anyone had to have a rear diff pinion seal replaced?
We have a 71-plate on just shy if 42k miles and have spotted some oil drips on the drive.

Sticking the car in offroad allowed me to see the rear diff with a sheen of gear oil over it, coming from the leading end (i.e. not from the drain plug).

Will be phoning the local indie for a check, but can't think what else it may be.

Anyone with recent experience, what sort of costs? I can see seal replacement kits for about £150, and Google-Fu suggests around 4-5hrs of labour.

I think it’s quite a common problem on these cars. I got mine replaced with my aftermarket warranty in 2022. The invoice price from my specialist was £611 so not the end of the world considering it’s a LR product.

Spoken to the local indies, and they don't at present have the tools to do the work. At least one is looking into it though.

Spoken to the main dealership where we bought the car just to get a gauge on prices. They're 1.5hrs away so it'd have to be worth it to go to them. The upshot is that they are insisting on undertaking a paid for inspection even though I've had a diagnosis (typical).

Parts: £66
Labour: 5.1hrs (book) at £190+VAT per hour
Total so far: £1230 all in.

I'll wait to speak to the closest indie as the tools are listed as being around £500 (depending on availability with the cyber attack). I may do a deal if they can do it quicker.

Certainly YouTube suggests the older diff can have this task done quicker than 5.1 hours!

I have spoken to all the indies round me. Apparently LR changed the rear diff from an LSD to a brake based system, and that suggests different tools.

    - White Auto in Edinburgh - no tools
    - Engine710 in Edinburgh - no tools
    - MPP in Dundee - no tools

Now had an all in cost from LR Newbridge of £984.13, which is mentally better than over the £1k mark, but for a £20 seal really stinks. But that's 3.75hrs at £204ph+VAT for you.

Will be speaking to Andy at Whites again this afternoon after he's done some research. May need Plan B!
