Accepting deposits - L320 Backseat map light kits

Deposits are now being accepted. PM for further depails.

Trying to gauge interest in a kit to make the L320 backseat map lights work with the doors/tailgate/front light switch button.
I know it can be DIY’d, but not everyone wants to mess with wiring and some people flat out shouldn’t.
The kit would include two new factory type light assemblies (to replace the originals), a wiring loom and other items for a clean install. It will be completely plug and play with factory type connectors.
If there is enough interest or I can secure 5 preorders I’ll procure the necessary items and begin assembling the kits.
I live in Poland (but I’m not Polish) and the mail service here has suspended shipping goods to the US for the time being, but will ship when service continues.

Price will be as follows plus postage:
$50 USD TBD
€45 Euro + €15 Euro postage
£40 GBP + £15 GBP postage
$80 AUD + $25 AUD postage 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Count me in.

As long as he roof lining does not have to be removed, the price seems good value. I have toyed with the idea of changing the rear lights to ones that come on with the front switch but never got around to it. The cave feel when the lights come on with the existing system is just painful, even with super bright LEDs installed.

My rear lights currently never get used.

Like Poland, Australia Post has suspended shipping goods to the USA.

It's something I've been wanting to do too for ages, but it's just become another item in my box of roundtoits.

If it's going to be just a straight swap of the light, you can count me in for a set. Thumbs Up

You do not need to drop the headliner at all. You will need to pull away the right hand side inner rear pillar trim and the rearmost part of the inner quarter panel (not fully remove) for access to run and secure the wires. You will also need to remove just the upper part of the tailgate seal to get the wires to the light openings. It’s a very straightforward job that you don’t need much more than something to remove the backseat map lights and cut the ends of zip ties (included). I’ve done my best to make the install as easy as possible so just about anybody can do it without any major fiddling.

I’ve got a more involved setup on my car (additional lights in the tailgate), and installed a similar setup to what I’m planning to offer on TheWojtek’s car. I think I only spent about an hour doing TheWojtek’s car and I was measuring wire and making the loom (crimping connectors, etc.). I think with the kit from start to finish would probably take about 30 or so minutes to complete. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Right this moment I do not have install photos, but I will when or before these actually ship, in fact possibly a video. The light kits I have done have had different modifications done to make them work. The kit lights will have a similar, yet different modification done to them to add a third pin in the middle (this is why new lights are included). The wiring loom takes care of the remaining changes you’d otherwise have to make with the pins and adding diodes.

Included components will be two pattern backseat map lights modified with a third pin, wiring harness with factory type connectors, zip ties and a length of random color solid core wire to pull the new wire harness to the light openings. All joints are soldered and heat shrinked, connectors are factory compatible.

This harness is 95% complete, missing just one connector (ordering more shortly). Before being shipped all units will be tested.

I can try to get a basic video of my setup, just please remember it’s different since I have additional lights and a different light setup (not plug and play). However, I can show the basics of what’s involved.
It’s a crap video, but you get the idea. I’ll get a full install video later.

Courtesy of @NoExpert I got the early prototype of this kit in my L320 and I can assure you all, it might not seem like a big deal for the driver, yet it is a gamechanger for the passengers, finally able to embark and disembark safely from the rear seats. Your grandma will appreciate this kit (think of the inheritance from a grandma that is happy with you), your kids will too. Regards etc.,

Wojtek

I look forward to getting this fitted, so just PM me with your bank details etc. when you want the money.

I'd like to fit another boot light too, so I may do that while I have the trim off when I fit this.

I can't believe how bad the original lights were - mine are all LED now, and that has made a huge improvement, but to have no passenger lights and only one boot light - is really cheapskate.

I think what NoExpert will provide is excellent and what LR should have provided when the cars were sold.

I have 3 flat LED panels in the front, which is great for the front seats, but of no use for the rear seats. The 3 flat panel LEDs just fit within the lens. I have smaller versions which will fit in the rear map lights, but have not fitted them because they do not come on when the doors are opened.

What is surprising is that the whole front lighting unit and sunroof switch is branded FoMoCo.

I look forward to ordering the rear lighting offered by NoExpert.

I looked up some postage prices and have added them, but I’ve learned the calculator can be way off from reality.

Here’s my proposal, I’m going to ask for 50% of the product price up front. Then when they are ready to ship I’ll get actual postage prices and collect the remaining 50% and actual postage. I am not entirely sure how long everything will take, I’m hoping for two to three weeks, but I will update as I go so nobody is left hanging in the wind. I have bank details for UK, EU, AUS etc., so if you’re fully on board send me a PM and I’ll send bank details. I prefer not to use PayPal since I have a US account which is now overly monitored by the IRS not to mention getting beaten up by exchange rates and additional time to move money (the US is a ways behind in banking).

Some day I may offer the lighting setup I did in my L320. It’s a lot more DIY involved as well as expensive, but I’m very happy with the results.
What the current kit on offer does:

vs. original

vs. my personal setup which I may offer to those who want to go all in and don’t mind really taking things apart, drilling holes and pinning connectors, plus a lot more zip ties:

And received. Thank you T.

I’m going to make these looms modular so the additional lighting shown in the above pics can be added “easily” if desired later. The first ten orders will be locked in at the above prices. After that the prices will rise slightly to account for the additional time/materials involved. I’d rather have them a bit more upgrade friendly for those interested rather than make it require a whole new loom, extra work, etc.

If anybody is interested in the additional lighting setup I’m figuring out pricing. Right now I’m thinking an additional £50.

Just know it is a much more involved job, but not outside the realm of DIY. In addition to the above mentioned directions; Remove the center rubber boot between the main tailgate and roof and route the wires through so they reach the existing plug in the backseat lighting wire loom with some slack. Insert the pins into the correct connector holes (will be marked). On 05-11 the RH upper tailgate strut and mount needs to be removed to facilitate removing the RH inner trim. The upper trim and lower panel also need to be removed which involves removing the screws for the handle and potentially breaking some of the clips. As mentioned before, two 25mm/1 inch holes need to be drilled for the lights to go into. There are mould marks on each side which are ideal locations to mount the lights. Zip tie the new harness to existing wiring, connect the lights when you are installing the lower panel and then put it all back as was. I’d say install would take around an hour or so. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
