Cr*p Quality parts 3.0L V6 diesel

These are photos from a 2011 RRS 3.0L diesel. I got a Restricted Performance message and a DTC code for low turbo boost pressure.

The throttle body came off in 2 pieces. The plastic weld between the Y-piece flange and the body was utter crap and literally came apart. On the other hand, the duct at the front of the throttle body was also coming apart at the seams. Another 2 months, and the duct housing would probably in two separate halves as well.

So both needed replacements.

Not the first I’ve seen, seems more common on the early 3.0’s. They’re 2.7 parts carried over and were updated in later years. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

If the throttle body & duct are carry overs from the 2.7L, they are probably not strong enough to handle the higher temperatures and pressures of a twin turbo 3.0L Big Cry

Pretty much it. Like I said, they were updated later and aren’t as problematic. So if you buy a new one for the gosh awful price they ask, it will be the updated version.

Just FYI, shop around for a Citroen/Peugeot throttle body from the C5 3.0HDI. Same thing, usually a different price. There are a few interchangeable parts between the two that cost much less for the same parts (apparently very expensive boxes they come in).

Oh, these are sequential turbo, not twin turbo. Big difference. 90% of the time it’s running on the primary turbo, then you get above 2800RPM and the secondary turbo jumps into the game giving the primary a helping hand to send the car down the road at the higher RPM’s. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

it's 14 years old, plastic and has lived through thousands of heat cycles. Not entirely surprised it's failed. Wait until you hear about the inlet manifolds! Sold my Jaguar when they went.

I do struggle to agree that a plastic component that's performed floorlesly for 14 years in a car is cr*p. You could argue they should have used cast metal for everything but that would have added considerably to the weight and cost. Weight not being a concern in the land of free diesel (relative to Europe fuel costs) but over here, every ounce counts. It's done pretty well when you think about it. 2021 L494 D300MHEV Autobiography

It's the plastic welding that broke, not the actual body. The weld was not even consistent all round the plastic flange, hence "cr*p"

I think the term is 'fit for purpose'. After all, it worked perfectly for well in excess of it's design life.

I work in IT. When Indian teams started showing up, we gave them 6 months. What they did was utter crap. They didn't know the basics and what they did do was what I'd expect from a kid in his bedroom. Stupid mistakes and most 'quality techniques' they'd never even heard of. Their code wasn't scalable or maintainable or efficient. Yes it worked, ish, but for how long?

Yet they lasted. It took a while for the penny to drop.
We were Chippendale. Beautifully crafted quality that would last generations. They were Ikea.
An Ikea Lak table is the biggest piece of crap you've ever seen, but it'll keep your coffee cup off the floor as well as any handcrafted artisan table, will last a year or two and, most importantly, it's cheap.

So crap is a relative term. The question is really, does it meet the design brief? 2021 L494 D300MHEV Autobiography
