ACE system bleeding

Hi All,

I have just finished replacing the front ACE pipes on my 2012 L320. I have searched the site and am struggling to find anything relating to the bleeding of the system. Some sites I have found say you need a scan tool, some say a pressure vessel similar to that used when bleeding brakes, others say it has to be a GAP tool with yet more saying the GAP tool doesn't have that function.

Any advice/ links would be greatly appreciated. I'm meant to be towing my caravan later today Sad

Car is showing a yellow triangle and telling me there's an issue with the lean angle. Anyone else have this? I can't clear it with the GAP tool.

The workshop manual shows a type of pressurised brake bleeder connected to the reservoir and a fancy box that connects to the Solenoids on the valve block. This box then allows the user to function the valve block while opening the bleed screw on the ACE bar. No sure how many people actually use this method,,, I think most generally rely on the system bleeding itself,, check the bleed screw and keep an eye on reservoir level for a few days. 2010 RRS, TDV8

I just replace the filter every two years and remove and replace the fluid from the reservoir about 5 times (running the engine for about 5 minutes each change). I know it doesn't replace all the fluid in the system, but if you change the fluid often enough, I would have thought that it eventually gets changed. I have been doing this for over 20 years now (on two vehicles) and it seems to work - no leaks and the fluid seems reasonably clear each time I change it. So unless someone can tell me otherwise, I will keep on with the same method.

I imagine if you empty and refill the reservoir enough eventually most of the fluid would be changed, however just running the engine will not circulate the fluid through the system just the pump as the vehicle need to be moving etc. to get the lateral movement through the vehicle to open the valve block solenoids to allow the oil to circulate, so the vehicle would need to be driven after each reservoir oil change I would think, as the capacity of the reservoir is only 0.4 liters and the total system is 2.4 liters according to L/R

As for bleeding the system if you haven't got the £800.00 worth of special tools, have never noticed that function on the Gap tool either, if it was I think you would still need a pressure bleeder tool of some sort. Personally I would stick it in dynamic mode and drive it like I stole it around so bendy roads and see if that helped it self bleed. Laughing

Cheers
Col

I believe the Black Box Solutions Faultmate MSV-2 which I have (had it since the car was new) has the ability to open and close the valve block solenoids. I just need to read through the bumpf to find out how to do it.

Never thought of that, I have one off those tucked away somewhere will have to dig out the old laptop which has the VE program on it which you can pull up a demonstration mode, will have to have a look and see, although probably out of date by now. Could ask Colin at blackbox solutions I suppose used to be a member BBS SPY on this and the Disco forum, but have not seen a post from him for several years.

Cheers
