Yes, valve. They did say that but I then doubted myself and edited the post from valve to cylinder.

They haven't made me an offer for the car. I asked if they would sell as a non-runner for commission and they declined that too.

Looking at the pictures of the stripped down engine (and as far as I am aware, this is as far as the strip down went before rebuilding) would they have disturbed the valves and heads? I'm trying to Google an exploded diagram of the engine to see what parts they impacted in the work but not having much joy.

As far as I am aware it was stripped and rebuilt. I don't think they then machined anything, or if they did, they never mentioned it.

For the cost they charged i would have expected the head to be removed and inspected, this would then need to be stripped and skimmed before replacement which would involve removing and replacing the valves. Do you have an invoice showing what parts they supplied, that would give us a clue as to what the works involved.

Do you have the car or it still with them?

Those diagrams are very helpful.

I don't think the cam lobes ever came off which if I am reading it correctly, means they didn't get beyond removing the inlet manifold. Lots of other bits came off for access but I don't think they got any further into the engine. Given the nature of the problem, I am not sure they needed to go further although I cannot say wether or not that would have been good practice. I would be astounded if anything was skimmed and it not mentioned.

I'll see if I can locate the invoice.

Got the car back. Definitely not the injector. I spoke to the guy returning the car on his flat bed and they sprayed the injectors while he was there to check for leaks.

Seems the noise is in the top half of the engine so something perhaps a new cylinder block could fix but not sure that is economically viable for me to pay a mechanic to do.

They are going on eBay for £6k as a non runner and even if I get it going again it is only £10k as a trade in. I fear my time with this car has come to an end. Shame, as apart from the engine it was in great condition and I loved driving it.

2 RRS: I owe you a virtual pint for your help along the way. If there is a charity close to your heart I'd happily make a donation. Let me know.

More than happy to offer advice, just a shame it wasn't the outcome we hoped for. When you advertise it, be sure to list what was done and the diagnosis now as if it's only a dropped valve it's an easy fix for someone, it's going to be a much more attractive buy to someone than dealing with a snapped crank!

Maybe post it up on the forum first, you're likely to get less messed around from someone here than other platforms!

Sadly I can't post to the Forum. I fall shy of the 25 post rule for that sub-forum and I can't stick it on the eBay forum because it is my own product I would be promoting.

There is a very similar age and milage car on eBay currently going for just over £6k with a couple of days left to run on the auction. I've a lower reserve so hopefully it goes at the first attempt but if not I'll seek to address my post shortfall in the interim before maybe returning here.

If any members do wander by this thread and have interest the car is easy to find. I've even posted the video in the add of the engine noise.

I must have had at least a dozen people ask to buy it outright in the first 12hrs of listing. Seems there is more of a market for these things than I anticipated.

2 RRS: Sorry to read about the fat fingers. On the plus side, I think you are currently winning the auction to buy a fantastic project!

It's bittersweet but the car has now past it's reserve and will sell. Assuming the buyer turns up etc. this thread is now but a week away from conclusion.
