Engine Oil Spec for TDV8 (No DPF) – Still Not 100% Clear | |
Hi all,
I've looked into this quite a bit – checked a few forum threads, called some local Land Rover services (including the dealership), but I’m still not completely sure which engine oil spec is actually correct for the TDV8 without a DPF.
According to the Owner's Manual for my car, the recommended spec is WSS-M2C913-B, which nowadays has been replaced by 913-C/D.
Some local LR dealers, based on my VIN, said the correct spec for the EU market is WSS-M2C934-B (or its newer equivalents). My car is for the EU market, but definitely doesn’t have a DPF (I checked the exhaust system myself). The thing is – this spec (934-B) is meant for cars with DPF, and I'm not sure if the VIN even encodes DPF presence.
From what I’ve read and based on some research, using DPF-specific oil in a non-DPF engine isn’t ideal:
*WSS-M2C934-B oil has reduced high-temp wear protection, optimized for DPF protection – which may be insufficient for the TDV8 without a DPF.
Using a low-SAPS oil in a non-DPF engine can lead to inadequate lubrication, camshaft wear, or even turbo problems over time.*
To make things more confusing, I checked old service records and for the last few years the car has been running on Castrol Edge 5W30 C1, which is also aimed at DPF-equipped engines.
So… is there a clear and final answer on which oil spec is actually correct for a TDV8 without DPF?
Cheers,
Greg
