I have a venerable 2008 2.7 TDV6 RRS with 120 kmiles. It's been in the family 6 yrs and we all love it.
However there are a few issues:
Suspension failure. Off road programmes not available, compressor runs but faults out after 2 mins or so. But no prob's with Hi-Way.
Engine light - it's the blanked EGR valves.
4 new tyres needed by next MOT (December) General ATR3's the only option, no budget tyres allowed!
Weird air hiss from engine bay passenger left. Could be crossover pipe, doesn't feel like boost hose as no black smoke or loss of power.
Glow plugs are knackered but also corroded and may have to be drilled out (not a massive issue for starting though).
So there's repairs to consider and I reckon £5k may cover it!
Despite the dogs the interior's pretty smart but the outside, well, it's seen some action i.e. I drove it through a fallen tree once to get home during the storms.
Any new replacement would be smaller - Tuscon/Sportage size.
Used could be a newer RRS or Evoque/Sportage etc.
Pro's for keeping:
Despite all the above it drives nicely, huge load space and we don't feel guilty filling it with dogs and other grubby stuff.
It'll drive through a fallen tree to get you home.
No guarantee a used car wouldn't go horribly wrong - better the devil you know!
Heated rear seats.
Con's:
Big budget required for a car essentially worth nothing. Despite this could still blow up at anytime (although unlikely...).
Large running costs.
Would definitely want to test the various air suspension pieces and check codes before spending money.
Fix the EGRs or get them programmed out.
I’d go a different way with tires, but that’s a very subjective area. Costco have what you want?
Not even going to venture a guess on the hiss since the car isn’t in front of me to hear it. Smoke test may be in order.
Glow plugs aren’t the end of the world to get out, even nasty corroded ones.
The next question is how much will it sell for, plus your projected 5000 in repairs, what’s in that price range?

Born and raised in So Cal. Moved to the UK in 2018 for a few years. Now in Poland and looking at moving back to the UK.
Have a conversation with DM and get a realistic quote. That may concrete the decision to keep it. How much do you think it’s worth, £3-4k?. Not sure what I’d do but gut feeling would say keep it. Can you do the repairs in stages. Alternatively if you look at other cars for your budget what do you get age/mileage wise.
Keep it, did I mention that?. These will be a classic soon and worth thousands .
I think at some point most RR (whatever the model) will have this dilemer.
For the cost of bringing yours up to spec you could probably buy another one, but could end up with the same issue.
"Devil you know", far better than the one you don't.
Running any RR will never be cheap - you either tie a lot of money up in a new/newish one or live with keeping an older one functioning (sometime you end up with both).
FBH - My Disco 3 Had one but I didn't know my RRS has! I did a bit of looking on here and various posts seem to imply it should have as standard but I've never seen the smoke on cold days... mysterious!
The work could be done in stages but I am fortunate to have sufficient funds to do all of it now which why we also considered buying new.
My FBH doesn’t smoke either, but I know it works each morning from fall to spring since the car is warm when I get in it. At some point I want to get the receiver and remote for it. For now timed heating/venting works.

I just picked up a 2014 BMW 530d to replace the TDV8; the TDV8 has 123k on the clock and more than a few niggles, I can't shake the feeling that there is a hidden electrical gremlin in there somewhere after my last (expensive) electrical failure, the drivers outside bolster has deflated so the seats are uncomfortable and I know that it could do with a complete suspension overhaul that would cost several thousand.
It's still sitting on the drive, though, because WBAC are likely to only give me 2k for it.. if I'm lucky. On one hand it seems a shame to move it on for that kind of money and lose 8k plus 5k running costs in three years, on the other hand what's it going to do on the driveway? Slowly dissolve..
The 530d cost a lot more than repairing the RRS though! It now stands me at 17k (70k miles, 2 owners, full BMW service history, has the heads-up display, electrically deployable towbar, 360 degree cameras, self parking etc etc) and was one of very few things I could stretch to that I even remotely fancied the idea of. Other than the 2009 AMG C63 Estate, which could have been financial suicide
Must admit I did very nearly blow 25k on an early L494 V8, though, which would have been the definition of madness.
Anyway, what I came here to say, really, is; fix the RRS. There really isn't a lot out there that can replace them besides another Range Rover!

That's kind of it really. Living in rural Aberdeenshire we do get some proper winter weather and my RRS just laughs at that, not sure that applies to any of the other choices I have.

MY FBH on my SDV6 doesn't smoke either, so far as I know. There's the usual slight smell that is typical of them all, I think, but other than that and visible moisture/steam on a very cold morning, one wouldn't know it's there.

I'm not sure where these prices are comming from, compressor and air tank are less than £500 to buy and an hours labour to swop out on the driveway.
Recently did the air tank on the wife's D3 also seopped my weak air pump on my sport all diy.

Crossover pipe is not, I believe, a simple job. Might even be a body-off job. Of course, if it is, that makes changing the suspension struts easier as access is easy.
