Hi Col. Correct. The assumption for me then was wiring. Like the cam sensor wiring or the harness was disturbed. This has apparently since been tested and isn’t broken

Have they tried refitting the new cam sensor again? might prove something not really sure what though but can't do any harm.

Cheers
Col

Hi Col.

Ive just had it confirmed, although the old cam sensor appeared ok, they kept the replacement cam sensor in the car.

Any idea of the failure rate of cam sensors?

They are reliable. So suspect wiring or ecu

Do you know what sort of reluctor is used for the cam sensor?

I think it just looks for metal or a gap (air)
Inductive ?

The manual is a little confusing as it doesn't directly show on what it actually picks the signal up from.

If it actually means the part pictured below as there is nothing else much listed in the parts list apart from the gear/pulley in that area, I would be very surprised if that was damaged as it looks quite substantial, I think there would be more chance of the new sensor being damaged when fitted as mentioned in the first screenshot.

Cheers
Col

UPDATE

I spoke to the garage to try and move this forward. They gave me the option of picking it up. i asked how, they said we will get it running and just come and drive it home! Well its now on my driveway. They said it starts cold, it starts hot, but it doesnt start in between.....

As soon as i got it home i turned it off, locked unlocked and it wont start. So there goes their theory of it starting when hot.

Ill try again later when its cold.

So....

I have the car back on my driveway.

sometimes it starts, sometimes not. When it doesnt, im getting code P0341 Camshaft position sensor A bank 1 range/performance problem.

Last night we fitted a new OEM CMP sensor, and still the same error.

We did however notice some more issues. The battery is draining very quickly on cranking, so we are testing the battery today. at one point it dropped to 8.5v on cranking so no surprise it isnt starting.

There is a drain on the battery of about 5amp.

What is the odds on the starter motor being at fault? Not turning the engine fat enough? draining the battery?

(ps im not a mechanic, so learning as i go)

8.5v is too low

Sounds like you need to fault find the current draw and then buy a new battery.
There are guides in here or disco3. You put loops of wire inplace of some of the large fuses and out a current clamp round the loop.

No it won’t be starter

A brand new battery, although the engine is turning over a lot better, is still not firing!

Check the CCA value of the battery, on the label.
See how far off what it should be!

**FIXED**

Finally its back on the road.

found a guy locally who really was a specialist. fount very quickly that the front of the cam had moved forward by 4mm and this was causing the cam position sensor not to read.

So, body off, new cam shaft , full belt change and 30 hours after him receiving the car, i was picking it back up again.

He did say in all his years of working on these, he has never ever seen anything like it.

Tanks so much for putting in your fix - so many ask all the questions but when they finally fix it they don't post it.

Mine has a similar issue but not throwing any codes. As I have a cam sensor off another engine I will give that a go.
