2007 RRS 2.7 none starter

Hi Everyone.

Hoping for a bit of advice.

We drove the car to Liverpool airport in December. The car drove perfectly as it always has. On return the car just wouldnt start.

Engine turning over but nothing. AA turned up and it came up with Camshaft position sensor issue. Had the car recovered. The cam sensor was replaced and the car started again fine. The Old sensor was tested and there didnt appear to be an issue, so put that back in....the car started fine. 150 miles later, the same thing, wont start. Had the car recovered to a 'RR Specialist'

They told me the timing was half a tooth out. we picked the car up and it didnt even make it home. Stopped at a shop...didnt restart. the garage recovered the car and its been there 6 weeks. They have checked wiring, Crank position sensor has been changed and they are now asking me to make the next decision.

They feel the next job would be to change the reluctor ring. Gearbox out, big job, a day, maybe more labour. He cant say for sure that this is the isuue however!.

Has anyone experienced something like this and what was the outcome. Possible immobiliser? ECU? something else electrical?

What fault codes are showing if any? of course they want you to make the next decision then if it doesn't work you can't blame them as it was your fault not theirs because you told them to do it and you have to pay the bill. Find another "specialist" who knows what they are doing.

Cheers

Cheers Col,

P0341-29 camshaft position sensor 2 malfunction.

He has confirmed there was an rpm reading on cranking, but it was erratic.

All corresponding wires back to the ecu load test fine.

He says the reluctor ring can distort, but I’m really not sure.

Is he referring to the Camshaft sensor or Crankshaft sensor reluctor ring, as that code is Camshaft Sensor related and the
Camshaft reluctor ring is behind the Camshaft pulley and no need to remove transmission to replace that one.

Cheers
Col

Hi Col,

My assumption as he has mentioned transmission out is crank.
My mechanical knowledge is very limited.

I can help but think the timing is slipping?

There isn’t a cam reflector ring.

The ecu doesn’t know which one is as fault , just that they don’t match.

If they say the signal is poor, then I guess that’s it.

You can change just the crank sensor. Bit if a pain to do.
But a good compromise in labour

So what would the sensor pickup on then? as according to the workshop manual there is one although L/R do appear to refer to is a trigger wheel as well and is part of the exhaust camshaft gear which I assume is replaceable if required, and that fault code also specifically refers to camshaft sensor fault.

It’s interesting that the cam sensor is only used during start up.
And you only have a problem at start up only

The gap between the cam sensor and metal could be an issue. But unlikely I think.
Could be wiring.
Could be ecu or connector.

You can see why the garage wants your buy in

Col : could be a copy and paste error. Wouldn’t surprise me or be the first error in landrover document.
I thought the cam Sensor just looked for metal or a gap.
The cam end has those 3 metal loab things. Could be that

Or looking below, could be the square notch in the top wheel.
I know it’s also a cam lock pin hole also, but could be dual purpose.

Having said that, I would expect the outer wheel to have the lip to keep belt on.
And outer has sensor. So maybe it is the one with 3 blades

Have to agree wouldn't be the first time L/R have made printing errors, there doesn't appear anything obvious on the gear for the sensor to pick up the signal from and no illustration in the manual as to what it actually picks up on either although it also says trigger wheel on the rear of the inlet camshaft which could be the three lobe metal part you mention. So is it on the actual camshaft or the gear? as L/R don't seem to be to sure. Laughing

It on the exhaust side.

The cam is just a tube. So no, no significant protrusion. (Apart from ones inside head!)

It doesn’t need accurate timing. Just whether it’s in phase or out of phase with crank

P. S. Sensors look longer in real life.
I don’t recall a seal.
Picture doesn’t look like a 2.7 Laughing more copy and paste

Hi all, the crank position sensor has been changed, witch didn’t resolve the issue

Yeah, that picture is the TDV8 not Tdv6 I think the copy of the manual I was looking at appears to have a mixture of both TDV6 and TDV8 pages rolled into one. Rolling with laughter

First time round, cam sensor was changed. Car started.
Car broke down again.
Cam sensor wiring checked and is ok,
Crank position sensor changed, still not starting.

I’ve spoken to a few diagnostic companies who say there isn’t a test available for the ecu
So we can’t know for sure if that’s at fault or not yet.

Did you not say you refitted the old original cam sensor though?
