I'd be looking at the oil temp sensor first. When it fails (and the oil sensor fails more than the water sensor)
Then it also has a knock effect of showing false or no readings on the water temp.

No mate I don't think I can , are you saying even though the gauge is saying it's ok at half way up , when it's working , it may not be ?

My only peace of mind is the fan seems to operate ok

Where is the oil sensor ? In the sump ?

you need an IID or diagnostic machine to see live values.

yeap, oil sensor is side of the sump.
Maybe worth disconnecting it ? and seeing if water gauge is better.

Best to look at live values first, if you can

After doing around 1500km on the weekend in the RRS in a quick trip to Sydney and back I noticed that the Temp gauge stays on the low position regardless of the temp.
Reading back through here it appears it could be either the Water Temp sensor of the Oil Temp sensor.
How do I check which one it might be using Live Values from the GAP IDII tool?

Well live values, then engine paremeters .

However if the oil sensor is short circuit, it still won't give you a 100% answer.

If you were to disconnect the oil sensor, then read water temp or look at gauge that may tell you
