Options for replacement front wheel bearing please?

RR sport (07) passed MOT recently but only just! Inspector found a small bit of play in one of the front wheel bearings. Main dealer wants £300 for a new one but have found them on eBay starting at £35 and going up to £337. Just wondering if the cheap ones are complete rubbish? Is there an affordable brand that assures a descent quality? Be grateful for any input and advice before I pay over or under the odds? Thanks in advance…

The cheap £35.00 one's are made of cheese, buy either Timken or SKF and don't pay dealer prices.

Cheers

As Col says, buy the better bearing and then get an indie to fit it for you. Or just go to an indie and ask them what they fit and, assuming it's a good one, how much to do it.

Avoid LR dealers. They will charge a fortune and probably mess it up too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks fellas! Much obliged for all your input. I’ll look up the brands mentioned above. One more Q while on the subject if I may please. I am thinking of tackling this job myself at home. I’ve a reasonable skill set and good set of tools. I’ve been into Mk2 Golfs for ages and have always worked on them myself, including clutch changes and cylinder heads etc. would you recommend DIY-ing or a garage job? Cheers.

Hi I think you will be more than able to do it yourself with your previous experience on the Advanced factors page it informs you of the revised torque settings for the drive shaft hub nut .I have put a link below to a selection of excellent information on the RRs.

I fitted an Optimal one from Advanced when I had my L320. I don't believe they sell them any more though. Kev

Hi all,
I read Col’s post first thing in the morning and quickly found an SKF one for £97 delivered. I’ve used SKF wheel bearings for years as I remember genuine VW ones for my old Golf’s from the maindealers were stamped SKF on the race and presented in a VW box.
Hopefully fit it next week if we get a break in the weather?.
Thanks again guys for all your help. I’m new to this forum and well impressed with the friendly help from all who have given input. I’ll post how I get on with fitting to conclude this link. Thanks again.

Torque for drive shaft nut please?

Hi guys,
Thanks for all input on this thread. I’ve fitted the bearing which was relatively straightforward. However, does anyone have the torque setting for the 32mm drive shaft nut before I stake it on? I’ve read settings from 230nm to over 400nm. It’s a 2007 sport with the 3.6 diesel V8. Thanks.

The original figure was ridiculously high and allegedly contributed to early failure of wheel bearings. The lower figure was brought in after a few years. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
