No. White metal is an alloy of tin, lead, zinc and maybe some other stuff like bismuth. None of the constituents are attracted to a magnet. The backing of the bearing is usually steel which would be attracted to a magnet.

I'd be concerned that a bearing was breaking up. That's going to be a new engine (or at the least a rebuild) if you drive it and the crank snaps.

Best advice to not drive it until you have established what the metal is and where it's come from.


I know you were right, but I don't think I have a choice. I don't have enough time to find another car. I will pray that no disaster will happen by then.

It would be cheaper to hire a car for the trip than risk a destructive failure of the engine in your RRS. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I wouldn’t risk it, get a hire car instead like other poster has also suggested…

Even if it is white metal, it will be an expensive rebuild job anyway, why make it a potential total loss?.

Are you prepared for a seized engine on the motorway? and what could happen to you and your passengers.

Unless you take the advice given, ie don't use it, get a rental, your future post will probably be on the lines of " is it cheaper to get a rebuild or a new engine"
How can you concentrate on your holiday when you will be twitching at every noise, bumpy roads or stuck in traffic & imaginary noises as well as real noises.
Are you even signed up with a roadside assistance company?

I understand your point of view and you are correct. I have not sent the oil filter yet but I will see a specialist tomorrow to give me his opinion. I would also look tomorrow for a car rental, it is wiser.

I have insurance for breakdowns with a replacement car, but I don't want to break my engine. I love my RR too much. I would seek the advice of a specialist tomorrow with the oil filter on me and look to rent a car. Holidays without RR will not be the same ... Big Cry

Voila, I came back from vacation with a rental car.
My RRS is warm in the garage waiting for the report.
I contacted a company that does oil analyzes, I am waiting for the kit to send them a sample.
I am in France, could you tell me what is the cost of an engine in UK with transport in France, in case it is screwed?

I come to give news, the company which analyzes the oil announces to me that the oil must have 2000kms for a reliable analysis. So I have to wait and take the risk of riding this distance. Unless I find a garage that can analyze the engine.
