My First RRS!

Hi Everyone.

I've just bought this Orkney Grey RRS 2012MY. Its my first RRS but years ago I used to own a RR Classic 3.5 Vogue. I am chuffed to bits with my RRS but wanted to see what peoples thoughts were on having a precautionary gearbox service (LR say its sealed so don't do it?) and any other precautionary work I might need? Lower suspension arm bushes? Does the whole arm have to be replaced?

Its got a full LR history, 2 previous owners and 74k miles and has had the belts done, everything works and I want to keep it that way!

Also if anyone can recommend a good specialist in the South Wales area that would be great. Thumbs Up

Pete

Ignore LR's advice not to do it. Get it mega-flushed as soon as possible as you're at the tail end of the time that ZF (who make the 'box) recommend for a fluid change. Just dropping the oil from the drain plug doesn't change much which is why a flush is needed.

Bristol Transmissions do gearbox flushing, I believe, if you can't find an indy in S Wales.

Oh, and welcome to the club Thumbs Up

Edit: the arms can have the bushes replaced but it's often cheaper to just swap the whole arm. That way you replace three wearing components in one go. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thanks Very Happy Its good to be here.

I had been reading about gearbox services and what a good idea it was but then I spoke to LR the other day and they said don't touch it as it causes more problems. Left me a bit confused.

Roughly how much does a flush cost and how long does it take??

Sounds as if that's going to be a priority job Thumbs Up

Ignore their advice. Lot of cars been flushed with no issues. Bodsy in Telford is a mobile guy and I would highly recommend you use him. No need to drive anywhere either Thumbs Up

Hi and welcome. If the belts are done then yes get the box flushed which is around £270, worth every penny. Consider the fluid changes on the diffs and transfer box if it’s not mentioned in your paperwork. Apart from that wait for items to be picked up as it’s serviced. These are great cars and enjoy another way of getting there Thumbs Up . 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

As above, definitely get the fluid changed in the autobox. I know you said it has full LR history, but it's worth checking what was done/not done so you can make sure it really is tip-top for you going forward.

There's no point in replacing the bushes in the arms unless they are giving you problems. A quick dab of the brakes will cause a knock if they are worn. The rearmost bush in the front bottom arms is the hydrabush that is prone to wearing prematurely. As Rob mentioned above, Advanced Factors manufacture their own arms with a solid rubber, heavy duty bush manufactured by Meyle. These are the most robust ones on the market and many of us have these fitted.

You don't necessarily need to buy whole new arms and you can buy the Meyle HD bushes on their own, but it's the time and hassle of cutting the old ones out and pressing the new ones in versus the convenience of just fitting brand new assemblies.

Good luck with your new toy and welcome to the forum Thumbs Up Kev

The first rule of RRS club is: don't go to LR dealers.
The second rule of RRS club is: don't go to LR dealers.

Find a decent indy.

LR dealers are about as much use as a Russian tourist guide of Salisbury. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Great rules! now before anyone thinks I am going to the main dealers and I get a pasting on here, I only rang them to find out what work had been done over the years and to be fair to them they were helpful telling me.

Going forward I will be looking for a good indy. Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the advice. I will definitely get the gearbox done to keep it healthy. The bushes can wait as there aren't any clonks and the tyres are wearing evenly.

Does anyone know if you can get the rear door speaker grille off without taking the door pad off?

I don't think so. It's only a few clips and screws to remove the doorcard though. Kev

I spoke to Bristol Transmissions about the gearbox flush and they said that ZF recommend it at 80,000 miles, so I am going to get that done. I am on 74k now so have some time for that one. Their price didn't seem to bad either. Has anyone on here used them? they seem to have good reviews.

Promec were a bit dearer but closer to home and the guy there was very helpful explaining what to do about my rear end dropping Shocked lol Laughing
