Transfer box oil & Locking differential oil

Hi guys,

I have just noticed in 2017 my 2012 RRS V8 SC service it should of had the Transfer box oil & Locking differential oil changed as part of that service, maybe because the car had only done 45,000 miles at the time and this is the 75,000 mile service he didn't think it needed it. So he only had the oil & filter changed. But none of the subsequent services ask for this to be done, so as i would love to keep this L320 as long as i can i really want to look after it. And so i'm planning on trying to do this myself.

Has anyone on here ever done and this themselves? If you have any info on how it's done, or if you think i should leave to an indy please let me know. Also what oil and how much is needed for the transfer and diff? Just thought i would see anyone had any tips before i spend hours searching online & trying to find it in my manual on how to do this myself.

ps i'm a novice on car maintenance and don't have a lift etc. 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

Get your indy to do it. For the few quid you save doing it on your drive, you spend the time getting cold, wet and covered in old oil instead.

If you do decide to do it yourself, the single most important tip is this one: undo the filling bolt before you undo the draining bolt. That way, you know that you can refill it. If you drain it and then can't open the filling port, you're stuck! Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

It's easy enough to do yourself. Don't be afraid. Undo the plugs, drain the fluid and refill. Fluids are the easiest things to do on your vehicle yourself to maintain it.

Watch this video and you'll realise how simple a job it is...

As RRSTDV8 mentioned, always undo the fill plug first, then the drain plug. When filling back up, fill using the correct volume of fluid.

For your transfer box, you will need 1.5 litres of fluid that meets or exceeds the Shell spec TF-0753. The LR part number for this is IYK500010.
For example...
Ravenol DTF-1
Rock Oil Gearaxl TF0870
Smith & Allan Transfer Fluid 0753 (Personally, I use this)

As you have the electronic locking rear diff, you will need 1.8 litres of 75w90 diff oil without the friction modifiers. The LR part number for this is LR019727.
For example, the following fluids are suitable...
Ravenol MDL
Castrol BOT 720 / Carbon Mod Plus

For the sake of completeness, your front diff and also for those folks who have the open rear diff (non-locking), a GL5 gear oil with a viscosity of 75w90 is required. 0.6 litres in the front, 1.1 litres in the rear. The LR part number for this is TYK500010.
For example...
Ravenol VSG
Castrol SAF-XO Synthetic
Smith and Allan Geartech FS 75w-90 (Personally, I use this)

I hope this helps Thumbs Up Kev

Does your vehicle actually have a rear locking diff? I ask this as different oil is used for the locking diff vs the normal diff.

Hi guys, sorry for no reply till now.

Thanks so much for all the advice, so awesome to be part of this club.

And thanks knwatkins for the huge amount of info, incredible work.

And yes good point garrycol, i've gone through my manual but can't see anything relating to this, so i guess i will have to watch all of the atlantic british videos to see if they show one with difference on the electronic diff so i can check mines, or research this more online, also i just hope there not different on the 2012's to the 2006 thats in the video.

Do you guys know if the fluid bottles are shaped so you can poor them straight into the fill holes, or do a need a special tool or funnel for this?

thanks again. 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

If you watch the video I posted above, the guy in videos shows you how you identify the locking vs open diff Wink

I have one of these, but it's completely rubbish...

So I now have a small electric pump...

Ah interesting, yes i have seen clips of people struggling to pump fluids with these pumps. So an electric pump looks ideal.

Ah sorry kev, i did watch it but the baby started crying as i was watching so i must of missed that part. But was planning on watching it again before ordering anything.

I just looked through all the paper work from the original owner for my RRS and found this features info. Weirdly it looks like mine has an open rear diff!

Please see attachment.

But i will climb under and have a look myself after watching the video.

Also apparently you can ring LR and give them your vin and they can check your build/spec to triple check this.

Thanks again everyone. 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

You can do that yourself on Topix...

https://topix.landrover.jlrext.com

Just register with your VIN and you'll be able to access the configuration of the car when it was new.

Most cars have the open diff because the electronic locking rear one was an optional extra. Kev
