Another little project complete

As we know, the RRS and Disco 3/4 are quite heavy on the battery. Due to the fact I have a new battery that I want to look after coupled with my regular use of heated seats, heated steering wheel, timed climate and remote pre-heat pretty much most days, I thought I should give the battery a helping hand.

I appreciate many owners use the towing electrics to plug in a charger, but this was not ideal for me due to the following reasons:
a) The charger is left outside where any little oik could come along and nab it
b) The towing cover requires removal/refitting every time which is a bit of a faff when you just need to get in and go
c) I only have single socket, 7 pin aftermarket electrics on mine anyway (ie. no permanent live)

So, I decided to mount the charger internally to the vehicle.

A little IEC60320 C14 socket on the downward facing face of the rear bumper with a hinged cover to protect it against the elements...

Wiring routed through the grommet behind the nearside rear light...

The 12V side is connected to the towing electrics connector behind the nearside rear quarter panel interior panel. Blue/pink is permanent 12V to the battery and white is ground. Crimped spade connectors fit very well into the connector. Afterwards, I taped it all up to be 100% safe and secure.

And the finished job...

I hope this helps someone who may want to do something similar. Kev

Be honest Kev, you were just jealous of the folks in this thread, with their plug-in 400e's, weren't you? Mr. Green Mr. Green

Nice project, well done. Thumbs Up

One tiny thing comes to mind - the flap of the socket under the bumper might be forced open by airflow as the leading edge of the flap is facing upstream - or is the spring good and strong? Be annoying for the socket to get filled with crud. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Nice work, Kev. Thumbs Up

Don't forget a high-viz warning sign for the steering-wheel so you remember to unplug the lead before driving off. Laughing

Cheers guys.

The spring is more than strong enough to keep it closed. Although, I will check it every now and again. Providing it stays closed and the spring doesn't fail, I think the terminals should stay good, but I'll spray a little bit of light oil in there anyway to add a bit of extra protection.

Yes that sign would be a good idea Hugh. I know that's what Gary, gstuart, over on the Disco forum does when he has his CTEK plugged in on the towing point. I purposely used a bright orange cable and I will have to walk over it when approaching the vehicle. Fingers crossed, this will be enough.

What I may do though is just wire up a little buzzer inside the car so that when the car is unlocked and mains is plugged in, it beeps to remind you. I suppose I could rig up a relay to prevent the car being started when the charger is plugged in, but that's probably a step too far for now. Kev

Nice job.

Two small points.

Make sure the power cable does not chafe anywhere, you do not want 220v running through the car body.

Maybe you could have put the CTEK on the right side of the boot, inside the removable flap, it would have been more protected when loading the boot.

But, as said, nice job Thumbs Up '08 RRS TDV8

A bit of split conduit would work well to prevent chafing - https://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/split-convo...-tube.html (I should have bought shares in this stuff, there's miles of it in the kit car Laughing ) 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

No chafing will occur because the cable follows the existing route of the towing electrics. All 230V cabling is also double insulated and where the cable enters the car, this is via a rubber grommet.

I've ordered the bits for the warning alarm to prevent against driving off with the cable connected. I should have this installed within the next week or two. I'll do a YouTube video demo for you guys when it's installed. Kev

Sorry it's taken a while, I completely forgot to do a video to demonstrate the alarm when the power is plugged in. I've had this installed for the last 3 months and it's all still running great.

Here's a video of the alarm to reduce the risk of driving off with the power cable plugged in...
