Engine decarbonisation

Hi guys

I was thinking of getting my 06 diesel RRS decarbonised, as I do lots of shortish journeys in it, which I know isn't ideal for engine health.
Has anyone done this and does it make a difference?

The engine runs OK.

Thanks

Wwonder

You'd be better chucking your money down the drain. Makes no difference whatsoever

I don’t know what this involves.

But I had noticeable difference with Archoil fuel additive (AR6400-D and AR6900-D), read the first posting here for a description.

It’s a pretty cheap way to breath a smidge of life into an old diesel without getting anyone’s hands dirty, and I recommend it. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

I had mine done recently, and at the time I had a slight exhaust manifold leak which was only apparent under severe acceleration.
The carbon clean did exactly what it promised, getting rid of the carbon including that that had built up around the leak, resulting in the manifold leak being able to be heard under even the slightest acceleration.
It meant 2 new manifolds which wasn't good, but I also gained an avearage of 2 mpg.
The car had spent most of it's life in London before I got it, and smoked a bit on acceleration which is why I had it done. I now tend to 'use' it more than I suspect it had been in the past, so can imagine I wouldn't have it done again for a couple of years if at all.
Each to their own, but I consider it was worthwhile, and if you were to talk to any Audi V8 RS owners, they will tell you it's worth every penny to keep performance and reliability issues at bay.
Some people will say their cars perform better with a certain brand of fuel, others will say they are talking rubbish, the fact is if it works for you, use it.
My view is that it definately did what it was meant to, whch means for me, it was worth it in terms of cleaning away the carbon deposits, the cost of new exhaust manifolds and turbos was an unfortunate unexpected cost, but at 93,000 miles wasn't far away anyway. 2010 3.6 TDV8 HSE (Gone)

Having taken the plastic Y pipe out of my engine when I blanked the EGRs and cleaned it up, I doubt any "chemical cleaner" is able to to the job - required pure manual effort as the various chemicals I used did not have much effect - this included carb cleaner, brake cleaner, petrol, diesel, degreaser etc. The gunk had to be scraped out by hand using things like screw drivers and thin scrapers and only when all the heavy stuff was removed could the last bit be removed by various chemical.

If one was able to manually clean the system, these "sea foam" type products if used regularly might help to stop the build up but will not remove heavy build up.

Each to their own, I bet there are those who swear AR6900-D works whilst others say it's a waste of money, similarily some will have recently voted Labour and others Conserative, both 100% sure they views were right.

You will be able to find whatever you want on tinternet, that which suits your argument, and that whch goes against it. The people who make these carbon clean machines think they have something, and who in their right mind would manufacture a machine that didn't at least have a chance of making them money.

Like using premium fuel against supermarket fuel, if you believe it works for you, good, just don't expect everyone to agree with you.

I am convinced it was money well spent on my diesel, but wouldn't have it done on our other car which has a petrol engine. 2010 3.6 TDV8 HSE (Gone)

Hi guys

From what you say, it may do something, it may not.
Given that it runs OK, I'll hold off. I was considering it, as a BMW I owned a couple of years ago only scraped through the MOT on emissions, which was caused by it being sooted up. I'm just trying to avoid that situation again.

I reckon I'll save the cash for now - I'm treating the RRS transmission to a megaflush in a couple of weeks anyway, so its getting a treat.

Thanks for your thoughts

Wwonder

The proof is in checking how much crap is still in the system after you put the product through the engine - experience is that it is all still there. 07MY RRS TDV6

At 12 years old, Orxy got a well-deserved carbon clean - look at how much gunk had accumulated there 😳

Superb job by Carel and his team at Racing Technik - https://www.racingtechnik.com/ 😃

That workshop is so clean, it would make Ron Dennis blush

naks - that's blast cleaning using a granular material, not a chemical clean using a fuel additive such as the TerraClean system. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

My 2010 TDV8 has done short trips since new. The vehicle does around two trips very day of around 8km (to school and back) and no decarbonisation has been required - whatever that is.
I have run the vehicle with Liqui-Moly diesel "Clean and Boost" additive every tank fill and after 11 years no issues. There is a tiny buildup of greasy carbon residue which is very soft after the butterfly valves but nothing major. Overall the inlet manifold seems very clean.

I do not know whether the additive works but there have been no issues - so I keep on using it.
