Failed wheel-bearing...

My car has been doing quite well recently. I've managed to get rid of a couple of annoying whining noises (I told S,MBO to get out) until Thursday's commute back from Stevenage. I sudden realised that the 'whump, whump, whump' I thought was coming from the surface of the M25 wasn't, but from the nearside front wheel. Lots of squealing when turning, etc.,

I wasn't totally surprised when (I assume) the ABS sensor gave out and:

- ABS warning light came on;
- 'NO HDC'
- 'NO SPECIAL PROGRAMMES'
- 'SUSPENSION LOWERED'
- No speedometer

but I was surprised when 'PARK BRAKE FAULT' popped up after a few minutes. I couldn't see an immediate link?

Anyway, pretty Censored Rolling Eyes

You don't want to be wearing those shoes when it's raining Razz They aren't going to be much use to you when you move to Wales Laughing

And yes, that wheel bearing is completely shagged isn't it?! Did it happen all of a sudden or were there any tell tale signs it was on its way out? Kev

It went through is MoT a couple of weeks ago without comment. The "woomp, woomp, woomp" noise was the first sign that I noticed. I'd had some weird noises recently (and before the MoT) that were eliminated with a change of power-steering fluid.

The good news is that when I stopped at the roadside to try and find the noise, I found a 17 mm spanner sticking out the under-tray. Unlike me to drop something and not retrieve it. I took the car to the local Indie on Friday to book it in for this and having the EPB looked at: he could hear the bearing from miles away. Common-sense suggests changing the one on the other side at the same time but the nearside one has all the grief going round roundabouts.

As for the Crocs, they are long overdue a re-tread, so there could well be a risk of aqua-planing in the wet.

Had an advisory for a wheel bearing on mine last month - so far I can't hear the tell-tale whomp, but do hear the occasional 'whirrr' that goes away if you unload one side of the suspension.. doesn't look like a terrible job; undo hub nut, undo four bolts, refitting is the reverse of removal? Of course, I base that purely on looking at the part itself..

I shall now look at the manual and discover how hard it really is.. Laughing 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

easy enough forthe front, but getting the old ones off requires a bit of brut force.... I ended up using a full on sledge hammer to knock the old hub out... the neighbours looked very worried when was swinging it at the car Rolling with laughter

Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

There's a SST in the manual, used for pushing the driveshaft out and pulling it back in, which doesn't look that hard to knock up if need be.. certainly cheaper than the £300 for the tool, here: https://www.dingocroft.co.uk/acatalog/Tools2002.html 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Thanks! That actually looks quite simple.. he says, clearly cursing himself to suffer several snapped bolts and a broken wheel speed sensor Laughing 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Though not on a LR, when having problems in separating chunky bits of metal, I have spurned the sledge-hammer in favour of a blunt bit in an SDS drill in 'hammer' mode. Tapping all round broke the bond due to corrosion.

My front wheel bearing was going on my 2011 Sport.
Took car to a local inde specialist, front wheel bearing kit and fitted, new front brake pads, total cost was £375, I thought at that price not worth doing myself

I'd probably lop the end off an air chisel bit and use the air chisel, but .. same idea - good tip indeed Thumbs Up

Mind, I have a range of legged pullers if I do decide to do it myself; just nothing to "suck" the stub back into the hub (the second half of the LR SST).. probably a good shove and using the hub nut will do; that's certainly worked before for me on other cars Smile

Including pads that's really not bad at all .. if I'm feeling lazy I'll give New Duston Garage a call and see what they quote .. ah, heck, let's do it now .. £276.48 excl brake pads, less if it only takes them an hour. Not bad at all. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

It cost me £305 inc VAT, for an OEM bearing, clearing all faults and a road-test. Having it collected and dropped-off made the whole thing painless. It would have cost me that in lost time to do it myself and my neighbours were spared all the swearing.

TBH, at that price I would have happily had both done.

Not that I'm complaining about commuting round the M25 in my daughter's baby-blue, 998 cc, Citroen C1, but getting my RRS back? Priceless...
