Steering Wheel Upgrade

Morning All,

In parallel to upgrading my Android HU to a larger better screen I'm also thinking of upgrading my steering wheel from the 2006 version to the 2010 model. I have searched here but couldn't find the functionality of the buttons and most talk only of heated SW and Paddle Shift which I don't want.

I don't care about the steering wheel heating (live in the Middle East) but would like to know what additional functionality the SWC give with regards media control. Basically, with the current SW the control is limited when using the CANBUS and SWC adapter because the system can't detect a "long press".

So what I would like to know is what the 2 upper circular controls do. I can see from pictures I have 'mode' 'skip forward/ back' and I presume 'volume' on the left control. What functionality does the right one have?? Is it for text input or navigating the touchscreen? Would be interested to know to see if the expense is worth it..

I presume to effect the conversion I'd need the following:

2010 steering wheel
2010 SW switch packs
2010 SW clock spring

Am I missing anything??

Cheers for any feedback and help

The Right circular button is for the menu settings and will not work on a pre-facelift variant, when I fitted a facelift steering wheel and switch packs to my old pre-facelift apart from the paddle shift and heated wheel the only thing that would work with the rotary switches is the audio controls, I did have a spare L/H switch pack which I fitted the inner parts from to the right hand side so both rotary switches controlled the audio.

Cheers

Cheers Col Thumbs Up

Hmm, on that basis I assume that as I have to "teach" my HU to understand the signals it receives from the SWC adapter I could in theory program the RHS switch to do what I wanted? Or in fact swap the physical switches and still teach the HU what to do with the LHS???

Could you also confirm I'm correct in the parts I would need?

Cheers for the assist Thumbs Up

Regards

Hi Guy, when I did mine I fitted paddle shift, heated s/wheel also had ACC so bought completely new circuit boards for the switches from blackbox solutions and honestly can't remember if the original circuit boards are compatible with the pre-facelift wiring/connectors, or if you may need new boards as well. If you are not fitting a heated wheel and paddle shift can't think of anything else you may need, but it was a few years ago I did mine and can't really remember, but will rack my brains and see if I can think of any other bits needed, on bbs web site they did have quite a good explanation of the conversion which may help you.

Can download pdf from here.

I had mine fitted to my 2005 supercharged both sides of the round controler would do volume up and down the clockspring only needs to be changed if you are fitting a heated wheel if the 2 pin socket is not fitted to your own clock spring so as said if not fitting heated wheel you would only need the wheel and switch packs and the boards from black box solutions which as i seem to remember are dearer than the wheel cost Thumbs Up

Thanks Col/ Geoffsnook,

I'll see how I go with the HU upgrade first, and depending on the final cost of the work I need to get done, including possibly some software reprogramming...

l also need to check with BBS is I can programme the LHS for other functions , or if with their new boards it will be fixed to the basic media controls.

Thanks again to you both for the valuable feedback Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
