Tyre Change / Vehicle Height?

Hi,

I'll be having 4 new tyres fitted soon including Hunter Alignment.

I was wondering if it matters what height the car is at (Access / Standard / High) during the change process?

If it does matter what level should I make sure the car is at?

As always the advice of you good people would be appreciated.

Thanks. Barrie.

Standard height, but make sure they put your vehicle into tight tolerance mode. I believe the Hunter machine will prompt the operator to do this. Kev

In case I ever have to have this done unplanned (eg after a puncture), how does one put it into tight tolerance mode - or does it need a piece of special equipment (and do all tyre places have it)? RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

It's done with a diagnostics tool, for example the GAP IID tool.

I'm not sure how tyre places or garages do it. Maybe the Hunter machine connects up to the car directly and puts it in the correct mode but I cannot be sure. Kev

I usually just lock the car down into access mode as you would if you were in a multi storey car park, this just stops things extending when the wheels are off the ground. Obviously if this is wrong someone correct me please! Wouldn’t like to give bumb info.. Thumbs Up Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE

That would seem to be totally the wrong approach to me, Stu - since the geo changes (dramatically) between ride heights, camber notably, if you set the camber up at Access height then it should be completely wrong at Normal height?

@ aaronjb, sorry I maybe wasn’t clear with what I meant. It was only for the tyre change I lock it down as it were!. Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE

Gotcha, that makes much more sense Thumbs Up although I thought the idea was to lock it in fully extended mode for tyre changes; no idea why, just what the tyre place insisted I do.. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

If I jack my car from extended, my jack runs out of reach. If I jack from access it’s well within its travel limit however when I lower the jack, I can’t get it out as the cars stance has now changed and I have to raise the suspension to remove the jack. If your just changing the tyres there’s no need for tight tolerance mode unless you have the alignment done (which you are). When I enquired at my local Hunter place they said they charge extra for plugging into the diag port as it’s not done as standard so I did it myself on the IDD tool. 2012 5.0 SC AB

I have a scissor lift that the Cobra is currently sitting on .. brilliant bit of kit.

Sadly the RRS won't fit in that garage length wise, and won't fit in the other garage height wise Laughing first world problems! 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S
