LED Light Bar

The shorter days are coming and not only am I still commuting at 04:00, we are (hopefully) moving to rural Wales. Even with the extra driving-lights in the front bumper and LED lamps, I'm still not impressed with the lighting. If I get one of these LED light bars:

a) Will it help, and
b) Front bumper (in front of grille) or roof-mounted?

I am about to install a pair of Hella 350mm pencil beam light bars on both sides of the number plate.

They are light enough/and small enough to be mounted within the bumper bar and they are made in New Zealand. I have tested them and they will make a substantial difference.

Very nice - but not cheap.

Fitted to the bumper, the beam is likely to bounce around a bit; fitted to the roof would mean drilling some holes for the wiring....

Wiring can run down the windscreen pillar trim as my loom does for my roof rack spotlights if they go on the roof Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

The other thing with these is you get what you pay for, these cheap lightbars and spotlights rarely last very long before the leds fail or they fill with water!! Better to buy from a well known company and you know it will last and be as bright as the company claim it is Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I'm going to start off with a cheap 32" one fitted to the bumper: it may not be as effective as a 50" one fitted to the roof but the wiring is less complicated and the relay can be put in parallel with that for the driving lights and, therefore, under the control of the pukka switch on the dash; mounting it on the roof is more complicated and noisy.

I'll soon find out if the el cheapo ones like muddy water. Then I might step up to one of the proper ones.

Hey Hugh

Having you got Xenons? I have them + LEDs for Main & Spot and would have to say that I have plenty of light in rural Wales. I also tend to press on in the twists and have no problems in seeing what I need to see at NSL.

Saying that, would be happy to split the cost of a set of second hand roof bars with you so that we each had one to mount a 50" bar on. For me not for driving but lighting up fields Very Happy
