Auto Detailer damaged the radio LCD display (SOLVED)

I just had my 2008 RRS HSE fully detailed. When I got it back I noticed the Radio Head Unit LCD display had blotches all over the inside of the display. The blotches don't appear to be damage to the pixels but look like moisture or delamination of the screen. The display was perfectly clear before I took it to the detailer.

I showed it to the detailer and he said nothing was sprayed directly onto the head unit. He is not willing to take responsibility.

The display backlight and pixels all work normally.

Is there a way to get the screen to clear back up?

That’s liquid behind the lcd screen (seems obvious)

I had similar a few years ago when I was too liberal with spray included to apply a screen protector on an iPhone,

It dried out after a day of 2 of use as it warmed up and evaporated.

Fingers crossed it clears up with no damage . 2019 Svr and 2019 R35 GTR

My two-pennyworth: do the marks move when you press the screen, if so then it’s liquid. If no movement then damage to the screen caused by incorrect cleaner - may be?? Robin

So I would vote for screen damage as I suggested previously. I damaged my wife’s dell computer screen when I used a standard glass cleaner on it hence my suggestion. Perhaps they were cleaning the dashboard and didn’t blank off the screen and got overspray?? Anyone else heard of screen damage caused by incorrect solvent use?

What does the manual say about cleaning the screen? Robin

Hmm. Yes. Not wishing to point the finger at your detailers, but the screen sounds like it would be susceptible to harsh chemicals......

And it wasn’t there before you took it in; now it is!!

Quite how you prove that...... Robin

I can't prove it but it was perfectly clear before I brought it to them.
I am debating on pulling out the head unit and dissasembling the LCD housing. And or Censored on their stellar Yelp reviews. 2006 LR3 HSE

Its liquid behind, check the two pictures, it is already different, so it moves and can be dried out. 2012 RRS HSE SDV6, BOURNVILLE 12/12-10/14

Problem Solved

I decided to pull out the radio head unit and try to disassemble the LCD display to see if i could clean off the blotches.

Once I detached the Face Plate from the Head Unit (and carefully removing the 2 ribbon cables), I had to bend 2 of the locking tabs that keep the metal LCD frame tight against the board. I then carefully bent back the metal LCD frame to expose the LCD unit.

The LCD unit consists of 4 pieces. The top is the actual LCD screen and is the actual display. Below that is a white sheet of translucent frosted film. Below that is a translucent frosted white piece of thick plastic. Finally the bottom is the housing that everything above fits in.

I discovered that there was an oily residue that got in between the back of the LCD screen and the frosted film. I could see that the edges of the LCD and inside the edges of the metal frame got a good dosing of whatever the detail guy sprayed. I carefully cleaned the frosted film and back of LCD panel with a mild solution of Dawn and water on some toilet paper then just some damp toilet paper and finally a light wipe with just the toilet paper. (yeah I know Toilet Paper). It took a while to remove all of the residue. There was no way that stuff was just going to eventually evaporate.

Once all the residue was removed and everything dry, I reassembled everything and put it back in the vehicle.

Mission Accomplished!

Go back to the guy and tell him you fixed it yourself at no cost. And let him know he should be more careful with screens in the future. Ask him if you can see what dash cleaner he uses, I bet it’s a silicone based polish to give the plastic a sheen. Accidents do happen and he probably does believe it wasn’t him but if he can’t say 100% he protected the screen then he can’t 100% say it wasn’t him. An apology would be nice. 2012 5.0 SC AB
