Speeding Offence

I need advice if anyone can help.

I was caught doing 36 mph in a 30 limit and have been given a choice.
£100 fine and three points, or attend a Speed Awareness course.

This is my first speeding offence in twenty years.

I can barely stand the prospect of spending four hours listening to someone drone on about speeding and am thinking of just paying the fine,

My question is this ... what effect will having three points on my licence make to my insurance premium ?

I've tried to get this information from my insurance company but they wouldn't tell me.

The easiest way to determine the insurance cost of 3 points for your circumstances is to get insurance quotes from online comparison websites with and without the points, then see the difference.

IMHO if given the choice, everyone should avoid points. The fine itself is not much but the points cost you a lot more over the 5 years that you need to continue declaring them. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

From the interweb...

You have to inform your insurer if you’re convicted of any motoring offence, whether this is speeding, driving through a red light or using your phone while you’re behind the wheel. However, a speed awareness course isn’t a conviction so this would indicate you don’t have to let your insurer know – at least, not by ringing them up and telling them immediately.

It’s not as simple as that though, as when you come to renew your car insurance, some insurers will ask you if you’ve attended a speed awareness course. If you’re asked this, you’ll have to tell them the truth as any lying on your insurance application would be classed as fraud. In the event of a claim, your fraud could mean that your claim is declared invalid and you’d have to pay the cost of repairs yourself.

That's a very informative reply Jim.
Think I'll have to endure the awareness course and avoid the damned points.
Thanks for the information.

Keep your license clean and go on the course. A mate of mine has been on 2 (they have to be 3 years or more apart) and he said they were very good and he actually enjoyed them. Thumbs Up

Much depends on the instructors presenting the course. I’ve been invited twice in the last 10 years Rolling Eyes Wink Embarassed and the courses are usually led by ex traffic cops.
The first I did was delivered by a complete jobsworth who was condescending to say the least and didn’t really get the message across because of his manner. The second time was completely different, with good talented presenters the course is interesting, informative and interactive which helps get the message home. It worked with me, far more speed aware now, relaxed and patient behind the wheel.

If a speed awareness course can increase premium...take the points. I`ve never had an increase for an SP30 Most if not all insurance companies allow at least one SP30 Thumbs Up Steve.

The only thing I learnt from the course was that of the 20 persons who attended the course only 3 of them should ever be allowed to drive again...

It was terrifying the total lack of knowledge of the other 17! So has it slowed me down? No but what it has done has highlighted to me that when i’m on the motorway surrounded by 20 cars I know that 17 of them are being driven by total Censored
