United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Tonga Green
Low Mileage vs Later Model

Hi all,

As some of you know, I am looking at my first RRS to purchase and I am struggling with a decision.

I want a 4.2 Supercharged V8.

For roughly the same money -

2005/2006 with 40-50K on the clock
2007 with 75K+ on the clock

I personally think lower miles is better, less wear and tear - but I like the idea of a newer model - better features? Perhaps?
Maybe the 3rd party warranty is higher on the older model? Or higher on the 30K miles extra.

Are the 2005/6 to 2007 models so different? Do they all have the same standard features?

Is there a 'vintage' to be wary of (Oh 2005 was a bad year, cos they used blah transmission) etc.

Thanks for your time,

John

Pros and cons to both. These cars do like to be used, so very low mileage is not always better. If it were a TDV6 I would be telling you that the earlier ones are better, but the petrols are that much more reliable and AFAIK there's no particular year to avoid for them.

As heavy vehicles they do get through bushes, so a low mileage one may be better in that respect, but a higher mileage one might have had X or Y changed already, so again, swings and roundabouts.

Newer model=better features - no, not really; not within the pre-facelift range. The driveline etc. doesn't change either. As you say, both age and mileage is likely to affect a warranty.

In the end, you have to go on the car as presented and take everything into account to be able to make a decision.

Yeah cheers - is Adaptive Cruise Control standard or optional extra over normal cruise control on these models?

Scotland 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 SE Santorini Black

That is the first time I have heard it said that earlier TDV6s are better! Shocked
Whilst I have not driven a 2.7, the 3ltr face lifted one Has a smooth power delivery, with twin sequential turbos. It doesn't seem to need the EGR blanked off (not sure if it has them Rolling with laughter )
The face lifted one is also much nicer inside, and dare I say it, the front end looks much more modern.
5.5 years and 70k miles, the engine hasn't missed a beat, but yes, the usual problems have occurred like bushes, alternator and parking brake mechanism.

Cheers

As with all second hand cars, the three most important factors to consider are:
1. Condition
2. Condition
3. Condition

How well it has been looked after over its life is more important than how long that life has been. Timely servicing with issues sorted as soon as they appear is the most important thing. A fully stamped service book is no guarantee that the vehicle has been looked after though - a pile of receipts for work done is the best indication. Sadly a dealer won't give you any of this even if they have it in the first place.

I'd like service histories to be fully comprehensive and centrally held. That way a buyer can check its full history in the same simple way they can HPI it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I meant earlier 2.7s (EU3 05, 06) vs later 2.7s (EU4 07, 08 - but 09 was then better). Thumbs Up

If you are a low mileage driver yourself then buying higher miles would be easier to justify. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
RRS TDV6 HSE Lux (MY2011)... Nara Bronze / Arabica - now gone!

Adaptive Cruise was standard on S/C's and the naturally aspirated V8 petrol from launch, TDv8 also had it as standard. I'm not sure if it became an option on the V6 Diesels after 2010 changes. The problem with the ACC is that it has no fall back to conventional cruise control, once the warning "Sensor blocked" comes up on snowy days then you have no cruise at all until you clean the detector head in the left side of the lower intake, a real pain in the butt when you have ACC and want to do a long motorway haul in the winter when there is slush and snow on the motorways..........
Also for RRS there were no spec changes between launch and 2008MY when the phone cradle under the cubby box lid was deleted and replaced by full on BT handsfree and you were given an electrically adjusted steering column instead. There were also some colour changes like Bonati Grey and Cairns Blue were deleted and replaced by Stornoway Grey and Buckingham Blue. Also some changes to SE spec that got satnav as standard and IIRC the HSE got Dynamic Response as standard instead of an option, but not 100% sure of that one. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Mine is a MY08 and has the cradle and BT but no electric column adjust. It's an early one in the MY so perhaps these changes were phased? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

My 2007MY did too and it was bought in September 2007 after the 2008MY was launched and I got a whopping discount for taking old and unregistered stock! Up to buying my current RRS2 that TDv8 is the best car and best Land Rover I have ever owned, it was fanastic and everything the RRS diesels should have been from launch. My current RRS2 is that bit better all round though. The TDv8 is also the longest I have ever kept a car and I replaced it with a 2010MY FFRR TDv8 but it just didn't handle so nicely and confidently as the TDv8RRS with the same engine but better brakes and the DR system that the FFRR didn't have then. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
